Fitting new cistern components - leak advice!

The flush wasn't working. So we bought one of those nice and easy (ahem) flush replacement kits. Having researched more and seen inside, I think it was simply a worn flap valve. But to replace any of that means taking the cistern off, and to take the cistern off meant undoing the...

Fitting new cistern components - leak advice!

Another bank holiday DIY disaster :( Apart from the leaks, the new flushing system isn't working. When I test the flush, loads of water pours out of the gap between the cistern and the toilet bowl - where the two join together. Now I've probably flooded the downstairs neighbours too. It...

Fitting new cistern components - leak advice!

No - I didn't know about this washer. Guess I have to try and find one quick... Also the old plastic overflow which goes through the base of the cistern will leak (I know it will as I had to scrape off all the old sealant to undo it...)

Fitting new cistern components - leak advice!

Hi all. I'm using one of those cistern replacement kits, where you take out the old float valve and all the rest of it, and put in new components. But the problem is I had to undo all the other fittings that joined the cistern - like the old overflow, and the existing water supply pipe...

    Lost electrics

It's a 6A fuse, so it should be more than fine. We do have external and stairwell lights, but they run off a different circuit.

    Lost electrics

Thanks! I just noticed the title to this thread is "Lost electrics" - obviously it should have been "Loft"! I don't want to lose my electrics...

    Lost electrics

It isn't a ring? I'll trust you on that one! I presume it's just one long cable that ends at the last fitting then? We have a maisonette, 6 rooms + the loft, so 7 fittings. Can't remember the fuse rating right now, probably 5? I'll check tonight.

    Lost electrics

Hello. In the our loft we recently had a single light fitted, which is taken as a spur from the main lighting ring circuit. I presume there's no reason why I can't extend that cable further round the loft to provide two more light fittings?

    Buying loft insulation

Sorry, you misunderstood my question. I don't have any insulation at present - but the height joists are only 90mm deep so I was wondering what's the best thickness of insulation to use?

    Buying loft insulation

Sure thing. I'll get the standard stuff. Now what about the depth? The gap between the top of my joists and the floor is 90mm, so should I get 100mm insulation and just let it sit, or get a thicker one and try and squash it down? Thanks.

    Buying loft insulation

Oh well, I'll have to have a scout around! Last year, I remember seeing some insulation in one of these stores, which was 'packaged' in bright pink polythene - I guess so that you don't have to get your hands on the fibres. Has anyone used this? Is it just as good as the usual stuff, or just...

    Buying loft insulation

Hi all. Can someone recommend the best (cheapest?) place to buy loft insulation? I live in the Borough of Barnet, North London, and have near me a B&Q, Homebase, but can't find from the web if they stock it. Also am not sure about builders merchants, something like Travis? Thanks for...

    Suprima Heat Exchanger

Thanks Chris. You mean with some kind of burner? I guess I'll have to get a specialist in after all

    Suprima Heat Exchanger

corgiman.... This is a disconnect boiler which is sitting on my spare room floor. I'm doing this partly out of interest, partly for education, and partly because I need the part. Once I have it, I have an engineer lined up to replace it on the 'real' boiler. I'm not that irresponsible...

    Rot behind the kitchen sink...

In terms of quality - I'm using Unibond - that's reasonable isn't it?

    Rot behind the kitchen sink...

Thanks guys - good advice about the worktop support - mine is sagging, and there's a noticably larger gap to fill behing the taps than the rest of the worktop. What should you use to smooth in the sealant? I always use a wet finger and cloth...

    Rot behind the kitchen sink...

Last summer we installed a new kitchen. Behind the steel sink there is about 2 inches of worktop, which meets the wall behind where there are two rows of tiles. At the joint of the worktop and tiles, I grouted, and then sealed with a layer of bathroom sealant. Water collects there easily, and...

    Suprima Heat Exchanger

I'm trying to remove a Heat Exchanger from a (disconnect) Suprima 40. I've got everything out of the bioler, and unscrewed the four bolts which hold the HE in place. All that is connected to the HE now is the flow and return pipes. I've undone the flow and return connections, but the thing...
