Best place on hot water cylinder to mount DIY thermostat ?

You're a picky bugger  On a serious note though - I didn't realise how cheap the strap on stats were or I wouldn't even have considered building my own. The value of my time varies quite a lot - I look after a child with a disability while the other half goes out to work. While he...

Peoples opinions of Broag boilers ?

I like the idea of using standard components (obviously excluding the controller) - at least if anything happens to Broag as a company I can get replacement parts from the local plumb shop. Cutting edge technology on heat exchangers is a good idea but you're limited to trusting that the...

Thats the one  I just managed to get it going perfectly and the missus informed me that she had gone out and bought another machine  On the plus side my heating came on properly this morning, switched from HW to CH when the tank heated up and as long as it doesnt spring any...

Best place on hot water cylinder to mount DIY thermostat ?

Here you go - a complete controller circuit for a Servis washing machine from a few years ago. I got fed up with the machine refusing to spin my socks so built another controller from scratch for it with a RS232 interface to hook it up to a PC. I had tens of thousands of hits on the site...

Peoples opinions of Broag boilers ?

Well I can get the Broag 35c condensing combi boiler for £840 inc vat and flue. I had a ring around yesterday and the going price from most places is £770+vat and another £40+vat for the standard flue (£951.75 inc Vat) I like that fact that Broag are very open with their information about the...

Best place on hot water cylinder to mount DIY thermostat ?

Strange one this but once a month the missus fills it up and takes it to bed with her. Even stranger she seems to bite my head off at regular intervals at around the same time ..............

Also check the cable between the shower unit and the fusebox is of the right capacity - if its underrated you risk burning your house down !

smell of fish when shower is on

Thats exactly what happened when my partner had her shower replaced (by a Corgi engineer who owned the property). He put in a higher rated shower but didnt check the cabling which started to melt. We tried loads of things thinking it was a leak on the bath but it turned out to be underrated...

Best place on hot water cylinder to mount DIY thermostat ?

Having spent the morning with it I'm not sure now if its vented or unvented (I don't spend a lot of time in the airing cupboard). Bear in mind this cylinder has been running at full temperature with the boiler on full since we moved in last year........ any thermostat is going to be a help...

Best place on hot water cylinder to mount DIY thermostat ?

I'd have used a PIC Microcontroller with an LCD display and a small keypad for data entry. You would be able to set the turn on and turn off temperatures digitally and it would have had an automatic 65 degrees overheat initially to kill anything nasty in the tank dropping to 60 degrees for the...

Best place on hot water cylinder to mount DIY thermostat ?

Picked up a cheapo Horstmann cylinder thermostat for £8.50 and its all fitted and working :D Should keep the old system going until I can find a decent plumber to fit me a new combi boiler at a reasonable price.

Peoples opinions of Broag boilers ?

Dont laugh but initially spotted it on Ebay - turns out the guy selling them is a member on this forum as well and is Corgi registered so can fit them. He hasn't responded to my last email though so looking at alternative installers.

Best place on hot water cylinder to mount DIY thermostat ?

Hey - if I can pick up a strap on stat for a few quid and save myself the hassle of making one then I'm all for it :D Will go on a search tomorrow for a cheapish one to get this back up and running nice and quickly. I learned my lesson with my homebuilt networked computer controlled...

Best place on hot water cylinder to mount DIY thermostat ?

Existing thermostat is screwed onto/into the cylinder. The cylinder itself has a foam insulation from factory and the pipes protrude from this so fitting a "strap on" isn't really an option as there is no copper exposed. There will only be 5 volts with a couple of milliamps going to the...

Peoples opinions of Broag boilers ?

Will be upgrading our system from a sealed system boiler/tank system to a Combi boiler (wait for the flames ..........) Reason for going for a Combi is that three of us have showers in the morning (one after the other - not all at the same time) and at random intervals have one in the evening...

Best place on hot water cylinder to mount DIY thermostat ?

Spent the day troubleshooting my old heating system. It has a sealed hot water cylinder (no tanks in attic) and a 3 way diverter valve to switch between the tank heating and radiators. Found that the thermostat on the cylinder is knackered. It is effectively a SPDT switch so I was thinking...
