    Cucumbers brown and shriveling

In my experience this is down to too much humidty, in which case you need to ventilate the greenhouse more, and or powdery mildew. For the later look for a covering of grey or black sooty powder on the plants. This can be treated with green sulpur, available from you garden centre.

Nettles and blackberries, not for me!!!!

There's only one real way of getting rid of a bramble problem and thats digging, lots of it and remove all of the roots. You'll be surprised how deep and how far they run.

    Overgrown tree

My understanding of the law is that you may cut anything that overhangs your boundary back as far as the boundary. You may also return the cuttings to the other side of the boundary. You don't have to disopose of them yourself.

    Train un-fare

If your 16:30 train is late departing because of delays, should you have to pay extra then or should the rail company foot the bill? Typical government blinkered vision, Not invest and for go a little less profit, but charge good old joe public more. He will then get in his car because its...

Rubbish bag 'tax' to encourage recycling

Taxing your rubbish by weight will do two things, increase fly tipping and increase domestic burning of refuse. The people that dream up these schemes must have their heads stuck up their own r's half the time. Fly tipping is already on the increase because householders are being limited as...

Paving garden that slopes towards house. Damp/Drainage

I would install linear drainage along the house, at the lowest point. Alternatively, you could dig into the hill for the patio and put a small retaining wall and steps in to make a nice feature.

    InkJet Printer

I have an 830u and until recently have always used epson inks and never had any problems with them blocking the heads when used infrequently. Two weeks ago purchased some 'compatible ink' from a well known high street store and now all of the heads are blocked and wont clear.

    Covering patio with cotswold chippings

Whichever weed membrane you choose will not prevent weeds altogether, they stop them from coming up from below, but thanks to the little birdies, wind etc weeds will establish on most substrates given time. If you put sand under the stone, in time the stones will end up at the bottom and the...

Cats - How can I stop them using my garden as a public loo

A shotgun would be my first choice, rat trap, large brick or alternatively watch to see where they run through and set sharpend chop sticks in the earth at 45 degress, sharp end toward the incoming direction. Should work a treat :P

    Cutting hedge down to size

A Chainsaw will to the trick, take a little more than the 30cm because it will grow to the desired height and then you can keep it in trim with a hedge trimmer, it will also give it a chance to thicken out at the top, otherwise it will always be bare. Give the sides a good trim and then erect...

gravelling car park area on top of landscape fabric

Landscaping fabric isn't going to offer any support for a car. You really need to have a good sub base before putting any decorative layer on top. Ideally 6" plus of compacted hardcore, depending upon soil etc etc, would give a sufficient base, then lay the fabric follwed by the gravel. How...

You could start by turning the isolating valve off that feeds the machine, until you actually need to use it. Is it filling with clean or dirty water?. Is the power to the machine switched off when it fills?

Keeping the cats in the garden

What really p's me off is that if a dog fouls in a public space there is a penalty of upto £1000. But cats are a different matter. A cat can foul wherever it want's and there are no penalties. Double standards or just that dog owners are easy pickings. Cat faeces are just as much a health risk...

    Passports

I too have just got the applications for a renewal and can't see how they justify the cost. It's the same for a renewal as for a new application but there must be less work involved as you are already a holder and on the various databases etc. As for the price of the book, thats just crap. I...
