smart meter cuts off supply (?)

Probably not. My experience of these is that the trip coil is very much 'short time rated'. If it is powered, 'wanting to trip', for any significant length of time then they tend to burn themselves out. Consider that in, normal operation, once the device has tripped then the 'problem' has gone...

    Another installation testing issue

Unless it is something transformer based. If the OP is measuring the DC resistance of a small transformer, its AC impedance will be much higher & hence pulling nothing like 330W at 50Hz

    Adjustable dusk to dawn sensor

Not as obsolete as you might think..... https://www.sangamo.co.uk/collections/round-pattern-time-switch/products/q551?variant=41085910022 Still very much alive & well & made today. The quartz version has a battery backup so the getting out of sync problem went away some time ago.

    Adjustable dusk to dawn sensor

The problem with NEMA photocells that switch at 70LUX is that these were designed years ago for use with SOX lighting. The switching level includes a deliberate offset to allow the SOX lamp a warmup period at dusk before it got really dark. These can switch "too early" if used with other lamp...

Hot water cylinder spray foam for gaps

I can't tell you which type of spray foam to use, but I can tell you, around 10 yrs or so ago, I tried to "repair" damage to the foam insulation on our hot water cylinder using a product from a certain retailer that carries a product range that suggests its 'simple & straight forward' This...

    Plug confussion again

Never underestimate the lack of knowledge that a Customer has.... I remember, sometime ago, being asked about the hire of a microphone..... A few minutes into the conversation it dawned on me that he had very little knowledge of what he actually needed to accomplish what he wanted. He'd seen a...

Sockets used for out door equipment who is responsible for safety?

Me too! I have a 32A one, next to a tap on the side of the conservatory. It feeds the "doggie shower" :-)

Swimmin pool pump - replace capacitor

For those that come looking for this thread later..... As others have said, just because the motor has three wires does not necessarily mean its a three phase motor! A single phase motor will also have three wires - one connecting to the 'run' winding, one to the 'aux/start' winding & the...

Sockets used for out door equipment who is responsible for safety?

So, playing devils advocate here for the purposes of discussion.... A socket outlet (& I'm including Ceeforms here) is a general purpose thing intended for use by an ordinary person. Soooo .... that socket should be installed in a manner such that it is safe for use by the unskilled in the...

    Humidistat fan

I think the OP means the pull cord that is part of the fan and not a separate pull-switch. If you zoom in on the OPs attached image, you can see what appears to be a pull-string attached to what I think is a momentary switch. I suspect that this provides a trigger pulse to the electronics. I...

    When I move house...

Go OTT! The cost isn't in the cable, its in the work to lay those cables... Once you have the floors up & routes open... go mad! We have 48 points across our 4 bed house... only about 8 are spare! Its best to avoid distributed hubs/switches if you can. One central switch is best.

    Hot tap instalation

Perhaps not as much as you might think... "steam tables" will reveal the answer to be around 1.4bar absolute, so 0.4 bar about atmos or around 6psi.

    Immersion heater overheat?

I've been having the same problem since Xmas. New immersion (so it cant be scaled up yet). Thermostat set to 60 yet the cutout randomly trips. Its a combined thermostat/cutout. Have replaced it twice, still happens. I've now modified the plumbing the get a thermocouple inside the cylinder so I...

Device to reduce your electricity bills

Blimey! I haven't seen one of those in years! The fact that it still has solid green on the earth sleeving dates it somewhat. Is it still serviceable? Not sure about the 'mic' cable in the same conduit as the mains feed thou :-)

Using one neutral for multiple rooms

If you have only one lighting circuit (ie. they are ALL fed from the same fuse) then the neutral isn't 'borrowed'. In this circumstance, taking a neutral connection from a light fitting & distributing it back to a number of switch points does not contravene any regulation.
