Which LED bulbs actually last as long as they're supposed to?

I've been buying Philips ones making the (possibly incorrect) assumption that they're going to be decent quality. GU10 ones, something like these: https://www.screwfix.com/p/philips-gu10-led-light-bulb-345lm-3-8w-6-pack/250fh are the worst, we seem to get one going every 6 months or so, and we...

Child's behaviour... (Sorry for long post)

I've come to the conclusion it's ridiculous to think you're going to get to the bottom of anything that happens at the school. Teacher's could be wrong. Your kids could be wrong. I've had four different explanations of what happened one day at school: One thing written on the pink 'accident'...

Child's behaviour... (Sorry for long post)

Pushing off bikes is just inability to share and is very common, even if it's not always manifested in this way, and most of the other things could be considered pretty normal. Punching another child (in particular a girl) in the stomach and from nothing is different, and quite rare in schools...

    Decent cable,pipe finder.

Checked my emails from when I ordered mine and it's identical do this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/380474735528 (different seller, of course). 20mm x 10mm x 5.2mm hole. That 10Kg pull sounds about right. I wouldn't go any stronger than that or you'll find it a nuisance pulling things off it.

    Decent cable,pipe finder.

Hey Opps, In case it helps all the capping in my house is ferromagnetic (if that's the right word). I find a decent Neodinium magnet is an essential part of my toolkit (no, not the puny ones like in the picture here, but a decent one for about a fiver off Ebay) which I use not only for...

Looking to get into a tool ecosystem

I'm mostly Makita now, and haven't looked back, however few things worth considering if you don't like the price: If you did go Makita, I'd consider 2nd hand charger unless Screwfix or someone else is doing a deal. Check for knock-off Makita batteries. They're not quite so good as the genuine...

No roof felt... can I pick your brains?

I live in an old house with no roof felt. The roof is sound, no leaks no dampness up there. I have just one problem: Dust. Everything in the attic gets covered in it. It's so bad I left a Henry up there, so I can vacuum off things before I bring them down. I've never seen so much dust in...

    Drill bit advice

Disclaimer: I've never used a lathe in my life, but I've seen it in videos. If you want to reduce a larger dowel I'd get some 6mm steel rod (M6 threaded rod may be cheaper) cut that to length and put it in the hole, and then I think people normally hot glue some plates of wood to each end to...

    Drill bit advice

I do think the bit is still a problem. 6mm x ~200mm or more is long and thin, I'd want to go in a shop and roll a few on the counter to check them before walking out. I've had to take back shorter and fatter bits than that. Even if I had a pillar drill with sufficient depth and perfectly...

    Decent cable,pipe finder.

I got a Bosch one which was complete garbage. But I had one that came as a kit with PCB and components, you had to solder it together, I think it was from Maplin and that one didn't do a bad job. Had a buzzer that changed pitch IIRC. I've seen thermal cameras doing a reasonable job at this...

    Trend Airshield/pro/m

You may not need APF40 protection but if you do, this seems to be one heckuva deal: https://www.dm-tools.co.uk/product.php/section/12081/sn/TREAIRPROM It was already cheap without them, but the ear-defenders go for £50 individually and they're included. It's listed as VAT-free, don't know why...

How long to 'dry out' a door?

Yes, it is chipboard inside. I guess it's OK if it doesn't shrink. What I want to avoid is it shrinking after I trim it again to fit. So should I just leave it a couple of weeks then paint, then hang it?

How long to 'dry out' a door?

Hi everyone, I've got a fire door that I stupidly left in a damp environment. Not directly in the rain or anything, but it expanded a few mm as the weather turned colder. I've brought it into the house hoping this expansion will be reversed. Once that happens I plan to paint/varnish it...

    Extending a joist

I need to extend a 2m joist out to 3m, and I need to support an internal block wall approx 50cm in. So in effect the wall needs supporting by the 'extended' part of the joist. Here's a diagram: I plan to Insert 2x 3m timbers (220x47) either side of the existing joist with one end of each...

Open garage door from mobile phone

Most of these door openers are 433MHz (don't know about the OPs one). So if you had a wifi -> 433MHz gateway you could access a website to on your mobile to open the garage door. There is already a project for such a gateway: https://github.com/1technophile/OpenMQTTGateway

    Arduino programming

Please fix the indentation by using a code block. There is commented out stuff that should be removed for the purposes of your post here (I know you've given the reason for that, but you're asking for help from the forum, so why clutter it up), and also why do you define e.g. topPin to 2 and...

    Boiler cupboard removal

So, in short, I am expecting (hoping?) that approximately 3 x 120x120 cross section lintels under that floor joist will be sufficient to continue supporting the floor above, and that it doesn't actually need the left-hand bit of cupboard wall.

    Boiler cupboard removal

Yes, I certainly have, ceiling of boiler cupboard is about 120mm below ceiling outside. I can get my hand through a pipe hole in the top of the cupboard, and can confirm concrete is about 120mm thick. I can also just about touch one of the ceiling joists through this hole, that's why I know...

That just went to the local refuse place a long time ago but I don't remember it being lined with anything.
