plaster under wallpaper in 1950s semi

thanks chesser, I'll try again, it is a big job, but the woodchip came off much easier than I expected. I'm definitely going to try a patch with paint just to see and report back The colour is actually quite nice, very muted golden brown, better than woodchip anyway, but it must have been...

plaster under wallpaper in 1950s semi

thanks chesser, I kinda had this gut feeling that I'd get an answer like this, it has to come off and it takes work I might try just taking the woodchip off a patch and painting the paper underneath to see how long that lasts

plaster under wallpaper in 1950s semi

thanks Nige, this sounds right, the yellow stuff comes off with a good scrub, feels like its water based, the brown stuff isnt looking like it will budge though, so I'm wondering if I can just prime over it with something like Zinssers Bullseye, or if I'd be better off trying to take the...

plaster under wallpaper in 1950s semi

I'm redecorating a 1950s brick semi I've stripped the woodchip in the hall and underneath was yellow stuff, when I scrubbed with soapy water it comes off, but is a pretty thick layer, its not smooth and in places the white plaster shows through, so I assumed it was wallpaper paste, it smells...

1952 paint will it have lead

Thanks for the advise, I'm sorry not to have responded sooner I'm looking into the dulux versus Zinsser primer, both seem to have fans, so cant decide on which to use, but leaning more to Zinsser. I need to ask what I do about the small patches where the original paint has come off...

1952 paint will it have lead

Sorry John, I must be dense. The paint looks pretty glossy to me, more like paint for woodwork, no idea how it was put on. I dont really care what paint I use to cover it with (if that is what you are asking) as long as it looks reasonably smooth (the missing patches dont show through and it...

1952 paint will it have lead

The house was built in 1952. The original owners painted the kitchen, sold the house two years later and the new owners put paper over the paint. and as far as I know that's it. Now I've stripped the paper off. I'm wondering what to do next. There are some scrapes and patches where the...

Roof Noises: think its the aerial: what to do?

masona, thank you for your reply both me and the neighbour were convinced that is was coming from inside our own house until we talked to each other, then we figured it must be coming from the chimney which is in the middle of building its a scraping, scratching (slightly banging) type...

    Fireplace: replace vs retile?

Yes I'm thinking more about restoring rather than anything else. There are no really badly damaged tiles (no cracks, but some fairly big chips) any advice on repairing the chips, The biggest is about 1cm squared

    Fireplace: replace vs retile?

Its concrete underneath the tiles - two of the front ones have fallen off, will check out pendragan I'm a bit wary of trying to take the tiles off, , in case I get some off and then not the others, so painting may be a better option for me but can i just use any old tile paint? does anyone...

    Fireplace: replace vs retile?

I live in a 1950s brick semi. The living room has a standard tiled fireplace with an old gas fire in it. The fireplace tiles are chipped and ugly. So I want something nicer. I can replace the gas fire with a better looking one, but I'm not sure what to do about the fireplace. Take it out...

Installing PVC Wall Panels in Bathroom

thanks masona, I think using battens is only one option, I think they also say you can use sealant to fix it directly onto old tile, at least on the walls. I probably would only do it round the bath and not the toilet, but would definitely not consider this if I had to move any of the fixtures
