    EICR Questions

Hi, that's helpful, thanks for your comments. Yes, that's exactly what he said. Point taken about not using him again, but it's annoying to pay for the same thing again. Is there any standardisation / review of these EICRs similar to the new MOT system? I'm aware of the best practice guide...

    EICR Questions

Hi, I have just had an EICR done on a basic 3 bed house with 6 circuits. It has come back with 2 issues and a quote for £600 for a new consumer unit (existing one is about 9 years old). I was told “some circuits don’t have an RCD so there could be a neutral to Earth fault so the electricity...

2 Rads not hot. Flow, return & bonus 3rd pipe?

Hi, thank you for the replies. There are 20 radiators, mostly double and when they are all on the boiler struggles to keep them all hot and some rooms struggle to get above 17C in winter. Solid walls don’t help. heatservice – I tried turning off the other rads and the two problem ones get...

Position of magnetic filter on return pipe.

Re filters, I think they all use similar magnets, so probably perform in a similar way. Build quality may be different though, i.e. this one has failed due to cross threading. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/152973324826 Re the fitting location for the OP, if changing the pipe work isn't desired...

    Corrosion inhibitor question.

Hi, I assume you re-pressurised the system after adding the inhibitor and then again after bleeding the rads? Does the pressure stay normal when the heating is operating, i.e. 1 – 1.5 bar ish when cold, a bit more than that when hot and then back to the same pressure again when cold? You...

2 Rads not hot. Flow, return & bonus 3rd pipe?

Hi Rob, Thanks for your message. Pics behind the filter added. Return pipes from upstairs and downstairs join, then go into the filter, then out the filter and into the boiler, with a tee off to the expansion tank and gauge. I'd expect the plastic pipes to conenct between the upper flow and...

2 Rads not hot. Flow, return & bonus 3rd pipe?

Hi, I have 2 double rads that struggle to get more than ‘tepid’ when the heating is on. Boiler is a Vaillant ecotec plus 831, I think it’s probably undersized but these two rads don’t get hot even when most of the other rads in the house are turned off. Boiler flow temp set to 75C. Lockshield...

    PIR on rental property

As has already been said, in England and Wales there is no statutory requirement for a landlord to have annual safety checks on electrical equipment (unlike gas). However as a landlord you have a Common Law duty of care to make sure the property is ‘safe’ which includes the electrics and...

    Brushless alternator fault

Unloaded engine speed should be about 3,160 rpm = 52Hz for most generators like these, but 49.5 is nowhere near low enough to cause such a low output. I would change the cap, did you also check the cap for DC resistance? You should get in the mega ohm range (once the reading has stabilised...

Electric shower switching off trips RCD and the shower MCB as well as the ring main

It is probably as suggested above, however I'm wondering if it is heat, why the trip on switch off and not just after several minutes of use? If your ring main had something (or things) 'leaky' that are sending several mA to earth, that may not be enough to trip the RCD. Your shower may have a...

Boosting central heating output in one room?

Hi, I've used a fan aimed at a radiator to help warm a room quickly before. I found a large room fan set on low works best. It creates the best flow of air across the whole rad and is nice and quiet. Small usb style fans seemed to be noisier and only created a small amount of airflow local to...

Expansion vessel & pressure gauge orientation and fitting

Hi, I’ve tried to search and the advice for fitting an additional expansion vessel to a combi boiler seems that it generally goes near the boiler on the return side and it doesn’t really matter which way up it goes. Putting it with the connection upwards means air doesn’t get trapped in it, but...

Extension cord not allowed, but why?

Hi, thanks for the info everyone, at least I have an idea of how that statement may have ended up on it.

Extension cord not allowed, but why?

Lol, you would think the manufacturer would know their own product... just a shame that's not always true! What do you think could be behind them putting that on there in the first place though? Perhaps it’s what rocky said, or despite claiming CE compliance they found the motor was...

Extension cord not allowed, but why?

Not moving it is sensible, but why not just put "Caution: Do not move whilst operating" or similar on the label?

Extension cord not allowed, but why?

Hi, any ideas on why this fan specifically says that an extension cord cannot be used with it? It's fairly low power at 285W, even with a really poor power factor of say 0.3 that's <1kVA and there are plenty of heaters that are higher power and don't have similar stipulations.

2kw water heater and washing machine off same socket

I agree with what has been said. A double 13A socket only has to be manufactured to handle 13A total load (not per socket) which I find strange, but that's the way it seems to be. Quality sockets can usually handle more than 13A, but not usually 26A sustained and cheaper ones don't always fair...

    H07RN-F water resistant, waterproof?

Thanks, I guess I had been assuming that the construction of the cable, including materials used, would lead to a certain performance level - such as being waterproof for example. However it appears that's not the case. I'm a bit concerned that when I have something like below, or even have it...

    H07RN-F water resistant, waterproof?

Hi, I'm hoping someone can shed some light on cables suitable for the garden (SWA to junction boxes above ground and then IP68 gand and short waterproof cable to light fittings required). I had thought H07RN-F was a tough, rubber cable suitable for 'outdoors' type applications where the cable...
