    Replumbing a toilet cistern

Unfortunately it's not next to the bath, and I couldn't really put a run of pipe in without it looking pretty daft :( I might be able to tap it into the sink waste pipe above the u-bend though, but presumably if you're not meant to connect the overflow to the flush pipe (as you wouldn't know if...

    Replumbing a toilet cistern

Hi everyone - hope you can help me as I'm new to plumbing (I'm a DIYer) and want to avoid making any stupid mistakes. For what it's worth, my toilet is a low-level cistern job, with the cistern and pan connected via a PVC flush pipe with a push-in connector into the pan. The water feed into...

    Weirdest lighting problem ever

Thanks for everyone's advice above! Sorry - in my post, read "MCB" for "RCD". The only RCD's I have in the house are one running to the exterior sockets in the garden and one running to power the whirlpool bath. Lighting circuits come from the consumer unit that uses MCBs. I also agree...

    Odd Lighting Problem?!

If there are a lot of lights on a given lighting circuit going off together, then locatign the problem may be tricky. Do you know if it's a radial circuit, or a chain circuit (i.e. a line of spurs :? ) or a ring main? Is it every single light on that circuit that's going off, or only some of them?

    Adding new 13A sockets

I agree with securespark - running two cables from the existing socket to the new one is only useful if you can legitimately extend the ring, otherwise you're just putting a spur in complete with a redundant extra cable. Nothing wrong with just doing a spur here if you're connecting directly...

    Adding new 13A sockets

Best practice is simply to make the cable as accessible as possible where it needs to be, and use trunking/conduit where possible to enable the cable to be replaced easily if it should short or break. I prefer sub-floor runs rather than burying in plaster or behind skirting, as it makes it...

    Odd Lighting Problem?!

Sounds like you have a loose connection somewhere. The fuse will only blow if there is live current leaking to earth. If the live current isn't leaking, but simply doesn't reach the light fitting, or the return path through neutral is disconnected, then the light won't work (because the...

    Weirdest lighting problem ever

I challenge anyone to solve this problem! I'd be grateful for any input any of you have - I think that it's safe, but it'd be a comfort if somebody could confirm for me. I've put a new light into an upstairs bedroom - nothing complex involved, simply remove the old fitting and install the new...
