    weather

Nice and sunny up here all weekend. However, because it was rainy in the south, and sunny up north, it seemed to be big news (unlike the rest of the year when its the other way round)

    is Gordon on his way

Personally, I think Gordon will invent some 'health reason' that allows him to leave with a bit of dignity intact (in his own mind, if nowhere else) and start claiming his pension. The labour MPs probably need to look at getting a new leader that, even if he can't win the next election, keeps...

    What Aircraft was I on

Airbus A330 or a Boeing 767-300 ? What airline did you go with ?

    confused

Don't really understand your post, to be honest, but are you choosing to take the 'free' 100 pounds per week, rather than run your new business. Is that 100 punds more than you would have made working. Surely it would have been better to go into the full financial situation before shelling...

Can you see BBC web pages abroad?

I'm in Germany at the moment, and can see them fine. Don't think I've ever had a problem anywhere in the world, tbh...

watch it gov he's got a knife

Some follow-up on this, for anyone worried that 'you can't defend yourself anymore'... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/7266555.stm (not that repeated evidence to the contrary ever changed anyone's views)

watch it gov he's got a knife

Yes, we all know that. I don't think anyone disagrees. And that is pretty much how the law works. Why does everyone assume that if you try and point out what is happening here, you are somehow making excuses for the criminal. The police are merely establishing that what is reported to...

watch it gov he's got a knife

That's pretty much my point. Just because someone says the other person was the agressor, the police have to do more than just take it in good faith, even when it may look obvious in cases such as this. The fact that the 'killer' is out on bail gives you some idea of how the wind is blowing...

watch it gov he's got a knife

This sort of story, that gets everyone all in a lather, seems to come along every so often. Of course the police have to look into it if someone gets stabbed to death, whatever the situation may appear to be at first glance. If it all checks out (as it usually does in these cases) then no...

    Single Ovens

Our oven has finally but the dust, and so it is time to buy a 'new' one. However, we are planning on a new kitchen over the next few years, so just need something to get us 'over the hump'. Old oven was a Stoves 600 EF, Single Fan Oven with integral grill etc., and plugged into a standard...

    sharia law

Sharing out the cash is divorce cases is pretty much what this would be used for (as exists already for Jews) - Any civil case can be resolved by a mutually agreed authority, and that is kind of what is being proposed here. I wouldn't worry too much about the slogger-scenario of Sharia law...

    sharia law

As the archbishop says, people need to understand what is meant by Sharia Law in this context, rather than the misinformation. If it came, it would be additional to British Law and would cover civil matters like divorces, rather than criminal matters. It would be exactly the same as the...

    5 ands

In the song 'I can sing a rainbow', which opens with the line 'Red and Yellow and Blue and Green', the names of the colours are flanked on either side by And and And, and And and And, and And and a full stop. OK - Its more than five, but I bet the answer's something on those lines....

A bit more on the Heathrow crash.

Interesting theory, but I'm not so sure. This is 'kind of' my area, and jammers like this aren't that different to cellular base stations, and planes on the approach to Heathrow must pass reasonably close to many of them. On the other hand, if someone had invented an EMP gun......

    Rest in peace notb665

So sorry to hear about this Alastair always put some thought-provoking, yet funny, threads up on here, as well as letting us share in the ups and downs of his life, especially his joy at ending up with his new son. I really hope that you and the children are OK.

    Dudious conduct

True, but does that mean we should excuse it when it is discovered. Especially when you are a party that came to power, at least partly, on a 'different to all that seedy stuff that used to go on in the past' ticket.

    Dudious conduct

What has tended to do for the various New-Labour ministers during their time (Mandleson, Blunkett et al) has not been so much the 'offence' that they have committed, but the incessant attempts to weasel out of it afterwards. In Hain's case, it is the use of the 'fake' think tank to channel...

    Funny Places

The town of Muff in Co.Donegal has a few amusing offshoots.. http://www.mufffestival.com/ http://www.muffdivingclub.ie/ (though I'm sure some of these don't come about purely through naive innocence)

Health & Safety gone MAD! A national disgrace.

True, none of us were there, but I think most of us have enough experience of the 'boy who cried wolf' nature of most papers to be able to pick through what is and isn't said and work out what may really have gone on. However, if she had fallen off whilst he was getting some climbing...

Health & Safety gone MAD! A national disgrace.

My thoughts entirely - He wasn't 'dismissed in disgrace' as the OP states, rather he was nominated for an award and then left in a huff because he was told that he really ought to wear a harness next time. The investigating may well stop another coastguard dying in the future, but instead he...
