Stainless Steel Towel Rail - Recommendation

We went for chromed steel and bought the rails from Warmrooms. However towel rails have a disappointingly low output especially when covered with towels so go a size or two bigger than you think necessary, especially if your house is old and poorly insulated. I think the bloke at Warmrooms is...

    Central Heating Noise

I had this with my Y valve. I changed it but the bonk noise continued so I complained to Honeywell. They asked for a photo of the installation, which I sent and they replied that the valve had not been installed according to their instruction that there should be a minimum of 6 inches of...

Is my plumber trying to kill me?

I made a plywood cover for my shower pump, which has slots for the pipes and slides easily over it. I lined it with carpet underlay to absorb sound and I cover it with carpet felt, but as a precaution I cut some 1.5" holes in the cover for ventilation, which don't seem to make much of a...

Radiator or electric towel rail in ensuite?

Your existing pump might struggle to send hot water that far; I've seen problems in an attic. Keep it simple and use an electric rad but beware that towel rails don't have a very high output, unless your little en suite is well insulated.

    How to renovate "ornamental" taps?

There should be a gate valve on the cold inlet at the bottom of the hot water cylinder. The cold water tank in your attic should have a valve on the outflow. If it doesn't you might have to reach inside and bung the hole but that might disturb lots of sediment. Whatever valves you find, take...

    Danfoss motorised valve problem

The synchronous motors do conk out a lot but they are easy to change. However you will find that the retailer will warn you that if it turns out to be a fault with the actual valve, they won't accept the motor back. The 2 or 3 I've replaced have always worked fine with a new motor fitted but...

How to remove a stuck push fitting? And plinth heaters...

I've heard that those plinth heaters have such narrow galleries that they make excellent traps for any crap that's whizzing around in your heating circuit. Being the lowest part of the system helps a lot.

    How to renovate "ornamental" taps?

This thread probably explains why the hot water flow in my taps has always been so crap, from before we refurbished the house.

    How to renovate "ornamental" taps?

I think - and others might correct me here - that an old-fashioned open vented system is low pressure because it relies only on the head of water whereas a modern unvented system with a heat store will be pressurised. Hope that's right. As for buying, it ought to be possible to get good brands...

Maybe if we just knock that wall down.

You're a very tidy worker. Congrats!

    Stone circle for my parents

Nice job, I bet you and Junior enjoyed that. Now you need an anti-aircraft gun or a radar installation to stand on it.

    How to renovate "ornamental" taps?

Those old fake Victorian taps are horrible; by the time you've messed around trying to refurbish them you might as well replace them with modern taps. If you don't plan to stay long in the house buy cheap from a shed, if you do plan to stay, buy a decent brand. Make sure you buy taps suitable...

Close coupled toilets with insulated cistern

Love the foam insulation - mad genius! But I wouldn't bother with the back wall, I would just seal around the cistern with silicon to exclude damp air. The foam will reduce the flush volume as well, same as the old brick idea.

    Ascending soil pipe

Jeeze, I'm an amateur plumber but I'd be horrified to have that mess in my bathroom. Why the unfinished tiling behind and beneath the pipes? Why the manky pieces of batten? What happened to the crooked soldered joint under the flexi-connector? How does the plumber expect that angled white pipe...

Unable to access boxed in toilet cistern for repair

If the push buttons are pneumatic, it sounds as if you have an air leak. If mechanical, a linkage may be seizing up or need adjusting. It should be possible to pull the button plate out to check.

Drain central heating - leave water in rads?

Beware - cheap gate valves don't always close fully.

Unable to access boxed in toilet cistern for repair

If the button not working? Try pulling it out to see if the air tube is snagged or leaking. On my boxed-in cisterns I made the lids removable, good thing too because the Geberit flush mechanisms started leaking down the pan, a known problem for which Geberit have issued a fix.

Pushfit or soldered copper in a new build?

Some helpful replies, thanks; you have all confirmed what I think. Whatever house we build, part of the brief will be for a concrete first floor with underfloor heating which is, of course, a system that uses plastic but I will be wanting the services in copper and having done a fair bit of work...

Pushfit or soldered copper in a new build?

Mrs RR and I are approaching the time in life when we hope to buy a plot and build our dream home. I'm not a fan of push-fit, having seen one fail on the hot side of my neighbour's shower pump. If you were speccing a new house and wanted to get it really perfect, would you trust push-fit? I...

    Setting up a wood store

Back to the log store... the north side of the house isn't the best location because it will be cool and damp. Far better to build your log store on the south side where it will benefit from occasional sunshine, which will generally warm the immediate environment. If that happens to be a breezy...
