    wiring

And where is the key switch for testing going to be wired in? I'm sorry, but I can't visualise what you are trying to do!

Metal back boxes not quite flush

Gosh - don't we worry about daft things sometimes! On occasions the box is a LOT deeper than yours is. EG if it's in a kitchen you might have a layer of plaster then tiles. Manufacturers sell different length plate screws to cope with this. TBH, I'd rather have the box a little deeper to give...

    Quick once over

You are also missing FCU's for the under counter appliances. Place one next to the double socket, putting the fcu on the ring and running the fused supply to the under counter appliance. I'd be inclined to put the fcu for the extractor down next to a socket. Again, it's easy to put the fcu on...

    First time rewiring

Well, I don't bite so easily, nor am I a lady, and nor do I spend all my time on here moanin and whinin - sorry :) On here, and in other forums I occasionally delve into I do try to help people with less knowledge to sort out their problems where possible. I myself have had help online from...

    Simple Wiring for Lighting.

Ah - that makes sense! I was tired from a longer day at the electrical grindstone that I wanted yesterday. I suppose that a rose buried under the floor is better than some of the taped up chockstrip (or not taped up usually) that I see a lot of, but I'd go the JB route personally.

    First time rewiring

Oh, probably :) Seriously, I do think that the DIY title of the group might lull people into thinking that they will get help to do this type of job themselves. Also, I think that his builder (who should know better) led him down that path. But I also think that the way to deal with people...

    Simple Wiring for Lighting.

Am I missing something here?? The fittings are 3 plated now, and for some reason you want to change this standard arrangement for jb's and chockstrip? Why, if it's working already does it need fixing??

    First time rewiring

A good freind of mine has built his own extension, and had all of the work signed off by building control - except the electrics. To be honest, he's pretty clued up and has done electrical work in the past, incuding rewiring. He's been picking my brains all along, and I've helped him...

    10amp ok for lighting ?

It certainly is worth checking that the lighting supply is running just the lighting. Went to a callout recently where the ancient 5a mcb was tripping after 5 minutes. Problem was the fan heater some numpty had attatched to the loo light on the grounds it was the nearest source of power. It's...

    10amp ok for lighting ?

If you have a high inductive load (lots of flourescent fittings) you may need a type C MCB as opposed to a type B. It may be that a 6A mcb is correct for the circuit, but just needs a type C. Need a bit more info I'm afraid. How many fittings on the circuit, wattage, how many fluorescents? I...

    The Grey Wire?

When we wire in a bathroom fan, we take a three core cable from the light fitting to the 3 pole fan isolator with live, switched live, neutral and earth, leaving the light switch connected as normal. The fan should have been wired similarly to allow for isolation of the fan for servicing. So to...

100 watt bulbs to be banned in September

My problem with the alternatives to incansedcant is that the quality of light is not comparable. My wife hates the light from cfl's. Cfl's have been around for some years, but this issue hasn't been addressed - maybe it's not technically possible to do so. But until they are, they don't come in...

BCO requires competant sign off of installation

Well, the person who told me that the death of the MP's daughter was in part instrumental was none other than my college lecturer when I was doing 2391. And sad to say they were a bit out dated / wrong on a lot of things, so we did take to selectively ignoring what they said on occasions...

BCO requires competant sign off of installation

Well, part of the reason for part P is that a while back an MP's daughter was electrocuted banging a nail into a wall. She died. The circuit was run outside safe zones, and had no RCD protection. Now if it's urban legend or not I can't say, but I was told by people who should know that this...

BCO requires competant sign off of installation

Whilst there is some element of truth in this, overall I think your comments in that post are unfair. As has been said, part P (yes, we know it's a complete lash up) is law for a reason. I don't suppose you've seen DIY'ers wiring a shower into a ring main with lighting cable? I don't suppose...

Storage Heaters - not up to it

I'd seriously consider cavity wall insulation if you don't yet have it. Your electricity supplier should give you a grant towards this, so check their website. We have gas ch, but the insulation fitted in the autumn makes a huge difference. It might make a big difference in the case of storage...

Zs live Testing - does everyone do it?

I prefer to do the Zs as well. Using this, I've found several faults recently on rewires due to the crappy design of the cheap roses being specified that I don't believe would have been uncovered by R1+R2 alone.

    smoke alarms from lighting circuit

Do you really need to fuse the aerial point down on a 6A circuit??? I guess it's good practice to put in a FCU for the purpose of testing and isolation of needs be. Unless the manufactures of the TV amp state what the fusing requirements are. Personally, I'd take it off the ring via a FCU...

1st fix in timber frame house

Trouble with plasterboad fixings is that the wall doesn't stand up to a lot of plugging things in and out / abuse. I don't know if the tennants are careless or not, but I've seen a lot of fast fix boxes that are loose, and there isn't a lot you can do to make them tight short of turning singles...
