    Testing RCDs

If the RCD is tripping, it could be nuisance tripping but there is more than likely a fault in the circuit. Spent all day yesterday on what looked like nuisance tripping from the RCD. It was intermittant and no pattern to it. The fault was eventually narrowed down to an intermittant short in...

Please STOP disabling my back button!

Well, if it was just this one computer I'd probably agree, but I'm having the same problem on my laptop too. However, I think I'm going to make enquiries in some of the tech forums as the next step to see if there is anything awry / suggestions.

Please STOP disabling my back button!

Hi, It's not just ad revolver. When I can't use the back button I click the caret to the right of it and I see a list of adware sites. I'm experiencing the problem right now, and the list has view.atdmt.com and ad.uk.doubleclick.net in the list. The ad serving is not on every single page...

Please STOP disabling my back button!

I know the reality is that the forum needs advertising to survive, and I don't use an ad blocker but PLEASE cease using ads that disable the back button such as adrevolver and the like. I'm happy to view ads on pages and I will click on ads if I have an interest in the product but I ABSOLUTELY...

    design, installation and testing forms?

You can download all of the forms here http://www.theiet.org/publishing/wiring-regulations/forms/ Sorry for asking this, but are you competent to sign off this installation? It's not simply a matter of filling in a form - you have to perform a specific sequence of tests using a meter that has...

When Is An RCD Not An RCD...When It's A Main Switch!

On the NIC form, in the bit where it asks you for charateristics of main protective device (not awake yet - need more coffee - maybe not exactly the right words) there are two boxes to write down the characteristics of the main protective switch if ot's an RCD, so one might logically assume that...

Is a flash of electricity behind a light switch dangerous?

Also the switch contacts wear / build up carbon deposits that cause arcing through poor contact. Just change the switch if you are worried :)

    cooker hood wiring

Kitchens and bathrooms are special locations and work done in them is notifiable to your local building control office. It will need to be inspected and signed off by someone competent to do so. I'm assuming that you are a DIY-er on their first post trying to get the info as to how to wire it...

    Chasing Concrete

With a decent chaser and extractor it's possible, but I would suggest taking structural advice. Boarding it out might be an option. The ceiling might be false though. The original construction of prefabs, the ceiling sections were precast and domed a bit like you see in car parks. Sometime...

    downlighters... fire worry!

Wow - thanks for that! Just shows how good urban legends are at becoming fact. I was correct about consulting manufacturers instructions for how much insulation needs to be removed, but stand corrected on the fire barriers issue - thanks! Out of preference I'd still prefer to fit fire rated ones...

    downlighters... fire worry!

Er - no, obviouly not :) But I guess the architect has thought of this when they designed the house - or so you'd hope! I don't want to make a big deal of this, but I do think this is worth mentioning. One of our guys is a part time fireman, and I have heard tales where downlighters have been...

    downlighters... fire worry!

I'm no fire prevention expert, but I'd suggest that ALL ceilings could be regarded as fire barriers to limit the spread of fire to other floors by increasing the time it takes the fire to destroy the barrier. Iwouldn't take that chance and I would fit fire rated fittings personally just to be sure.

    downlighters... fire worry!

Nope, but I DO have a loft above a bedroom :) Our house was a bungalow until we converted the loft about 5 years back. We raised the pitch of the roof by about 2 metres to give wider rooms, and the benefit of this was we had a loft again! We call it the loft loft. I know - we need to get out more :(

    downlighters... fire worry!

Ignoring the flying handbags, to get back to the original question:- Have a read of the manufacturers instructions for the luminaire. They often will have specific instructions as to how far the insulation has to be removed. Also, bear in mind that if you cut into a plasterboard ceiling you...

    Filling in unwanted socket

I'd say not. All junctions and joints need to be accessible. I have seen this done, but would advise against it. If the socket is no longer required, try to reroute the ring so that you can then fill and tile as required. You could always tile, and then put a blanking plate over the old...

    stuck stop cock

'Twas an airlock (thankfully!) - sorted now. Just had a lovely shower in the new bathroom. Cheers for all the info everyone - much appreciated :)

    stuck stop cock

Thinking about this overnight and the way the pipes run, there IS a possibility of an airlock. Also, the valve turns both ways and stops either end, so I do wonder if the valve is working ok after all. The reason I think there might be an airlock is because the pipe runs down from the loft...

    stuck stop cock

Hi, Started the bathroom back in september, turning off the supply from the cold storage tank to the shower. It's got an isolator valve and a stop cock in the pipe from the bottom of the tank to the shower. Get to turn it on tonight having fitted a new shower and there isn't any cold water...

    Removing tiles tiled on tiles

Would anybody tile on tile on tiles? Not seen this in a house yet, but I'm sure someone has!! Either you buy the place and don't know the tiles have been tiled on already and do it again, or you are a quick fix merchant. But to go back to the original question, I think at this point I'd...
