if its a slot in sink, i just cut from the laminate side as the lip of the sink will cover any chips, also don't forget to seal the exposed wood after cutting with silicone

with flaky walls, i usually fill the drilled hole with something like gripfill (liquid nails) then put the plug in, then wait for the gripfill to set.

you can just make out on this pic how i routed the 32mm waste i used solvent weld as it takes up less space - and is neater imo. im planning on rebating a metal plate where i cut into the upright to add strength - but its probably not necessary.
