Any idea what these garden cables are for?

Turns out I was wrong, they are twisted, just cleaned the cable up and cut a piece off. The two lighter cores are sort of translucent, not white, can't really tell if it's got air bubbles in the insulation. Does that mean it's off some old TV aerial or something? Bit confused why there would...

Any idea what these garden cables are for?

They aren't twisted, they're far too thick and are solid core. The pics make them look quite small but they're probably 1-1.5mm square each, ie about the same as typical domestic twin and earth. Way too heavy to be coax or aerial type cable.

Any idea what these garden cables are for?

I stripped that one back, they're about 0.5m deep, both cables are severed in two locations (once at each trench!). I cut a section out and took the pic below. You can see it's two black, two see-through and a blue plastic chord, they're solid core and quite stiff. It's not live AC. There...

Any idea what these garden cables are for?

Hi folks, Dug through these two cables with a digger in a garden, just wondering if anybody has any ideas what they might be for? You'd think garden lighting, but, the cables were underneath some concrete outhouses which have been there since the 50s, so that seems unlikely. They're...

    Removing headless screws.

Just cut them off (and into the plaster a bit) with an angle grinder. If you don't have one, go get one. They're bloody useful and make things that could take ages (and risk injuries) into literally a 5 second effortless task.

    Concrete or Mortar

Why not go with a compromise and mix your sand with some ballast, for a sandy-ballast mix. Will mean you need to buy less ballast and can use up your sand.

First effort at a stud wall, flexing slightly?

The plasterboards themselves will stiffen the whole thing up a lot. Just make sure you fix them on with enough screws.

Laying paving slabs on sharp sand and mortar mix

How do you go about getting the bedding mix into the gaps between the slabs to a consistent depth? What sort of gap are you talking about between slabs? Not done much of this myself but when I have the gaps are usually tiny and I can't imagine how to get a wet mix of any kind set into them.

Large amount of conc to get rid of - Worth recycling?

Hi folks, Got a triple garage floor of concrete plus the accompanying driveway to rip up (and the bricks from the garages), plus a shed base and about 30m of concrete paths. Building some new stuff on the site instead. Will it be at all worth getting a crusher to turn all of this in to...

    Lawn spongy/squidy under foot

Just spoke to the water board and they've confirmed there's no fresh water pipes (that they know of) in the back gardens, so I'm thinking this is just surface water. Odd that it didn't happen last summer (I've only owned it for 12 months) mind. Thinking I will just try raising it 30-40mm...

    Lawn spongy/squidy under foot

It does dry out if it's sunny for say a week solid, however, the ground is still soft and padded. It definitely gets worse when it rains, it almost forms a pond if it really chucks down. I'm unsure how to go about checking for leaks - as this is the back of a back garden I'm thinking no...

    Lawn spongy/squidy under foot

Hi folks, I've got a house which has 3 lawns side by side, two of them are totally fine but the third is being strange. It's really soft under foot, and in certain areas is totally sponge-like, the soil appearing to have no density at all and just squishes as you walk on it. Your foot...

    How strong is plasterboard?

Fixings can pull outwards from plasterboard quite easily. What they won't do is shear downwards through plasterboard. In your case, the desk is not attempting to fly horizontally away from the wall, it's attempting to go directly downwards. It's kind of a shearing effect on the fixings...

Free standing pillar 2.5 metre high. How thick and strenghten

If you think a vehicle may collide with it you could always replace the pillar with an upright steel beam, then build bricks around it for protection/aesthetics. That's what they have around the building opposite our office, and the bricks are constantly getting smashed into by reversing...
