    Bathroom/Boiler Repacement - when do I tile?

Thanks for your reply Top Tiler! I was definitely going to remove the tiles on the outer walls(2 of 4 walls). Not sure about internal its going to leave a right mess of the plaster board. Are you saying tile before new bathroom suite is installed? E.g. 1)Remove old tiles (what about...

    Bathroom/Boiler Repacement - when do I tile?

Afternoon All, My boiler is being replace with a combi. The plumber needs to run a new pipe into the bathroom. As the bathroom needs replacing anyway, I've bought a new suite and he said he'll fit that at the same time seeing as its easier to work with nothing in the way etc. My question...

Building regs with converting loft for storage ONLY

Yeah good point re: fire. I'm actually thinking of putting a set of mini stairs in now seeing as I'll be at the house for a good few years. I'll replace it with a loft ladder when I come to sell if I have to. :P

Building Control are here to help you? Yeah right.

When my building control officer came around to pass off two velux windows in my loft, I was asking him various questions with regards to having a proper loft conversion. We were talking about where stairs could possible go etc. Despite my ridge board being precisely 6ft 3in off the ceiling...

Folding Stairs/steps help and advice needed, almost given up

No idea. I guess you could start ringing around the various manufacturers of loft ladders/hinges. Theres bound to be a supplier somewhere. Strangely enough I have been looking at folding loft ladders in the last couple of days. Without seeing them its hard to assess the quality and I can...

Building regs with converting loft for storage ONLY

Some very useful info guys thanks! I've taken it all onboard and this is what I'm going to do. Make a new hatch and install a wooden loft ladder in the airing cupboard. Plasterboard it all out after insulating it fully, but fix the plasterboard with screws - I presume this is possible...

Building regs with converting loft for storage ONLY

:D :D Good point about the staircase resting on the trimmer joists. In my case it would be resting on the actual joists due to orientation. But they're near purlins/binders. But like you said, its a grey area, or is it? Surely it shouldnt be. At the end of the day I think common sense...

Building regs with converting loft for storage ONLY

Thanks for the reply JohnD, useful advice. All of what you say makes sense if it is used and advertised as a room. I dont want to advertise it as a room if I come to sell, just the fact that that the loft has been modernised for storage only. Co-incidentally I had a building inspector...

Building regs with converting loft for storage ONLY

Moderator how can you honestly say saying my house will reduce in value is good advice when he mentions no reasons whatsoever of why the house would reduce in value. His comments were of no help and he provided no useful input to my queries. Noone has mentioned what happens when you sell...

    Need some loft advice

Hi Mike, I wouldnt expect too much proper advice from posters on here. Most posters consist of builder wannabees who basically work in trade stores. I'm in a similar situation to you but havent got the headroom or the hefty ceiling joists that you say you have. What is your question...

Building regs with converting loft for storage ONLY

Does that mean I should involve building control. I have people I know in the trade, but I believe if I dont have building regs and I want to sell my house it can get awkward?

Building regs with converting loft for storage ONLY

Hi there, I have a decent loftspace, however the ridge height is around 6ft 3in from the ceiling joists. I plan to convert the loftspace to something more useable. E.g. Make cupboard under the eaves, insulate the rafters and plasterboard it. I've already put in one window which I've got a...

    Joining ceiling joists

Yes thats it a ceiling binder. The partition wall is substantial. Unfortunately is doesnt span the entire binder if you know what I mean. Which is added complication. The rest of the binder sits across the ceiling joists above the stairs and landing. Actually, thats why its there. Sh*t...

    Removing purlin joining ceiling joists

Apologies everyone, joe-90 was really winding me up earlier. And apologies for venting off at you deluks on the other forum. Thanks at least I know they're called ceiling binders now, thats a start. And yes they are above a supporting wall. I spoke to a builder friend who has made...
