    3 phase question

'Unbalanced 3 phase loads induce a current in the neutral making the problem worse' However unbalanced the phases are, the current in the neutral will not exceed the current in the highest loaded phase (unless under very exceptional conditions!). Therefore the current in a neutral of a...

    Rewiring a house

Isolate power to the lighting circuit in case there is a latent fault on an unearthed fitting! Edit: (If you decide to inspect any light fittings - same principle with any other circuits you examine! It's probably best to do this in the day and isolate the DB at the main switch in case the...

    Old MEM Fuse box

Whoops! MEM, MK? both good makes! If the actual fuseboard is BS1361 cartridge fuse instead of rewirable then it should be even safer (better disconnection time!) Sorry for causing confusion, did read in a hurry! I still think you could do with somebody taking a look at your wiring...

    Old MEM Fuse box

Whilst it could do with an update, as long as it is wired safely, it is no immediate threat - MK have always made good fuseboxes and there is a common mis-conception that all rewirable fuseboxes are a hazard and should be changed for MCB's. Having said this, a new Consumer Unit would...

    bathroom bondage

It's a bit long winded to explain but this should help: http://www.iee.org/Publish/WireRegs/WiringMatters/Documents/PreIssue14/1999_6_autumn_plastic_pipes_to_bond_or_not_to_bond.pdf

    SHED POWER

Lets face it - if conduit is anything more than a short, straight run then drawing through is not an option! :(

Are the building regs part of 7671?

Been looking at Part M far too much in the last 24 hrs!!! This is 'copy pasted' from the 'where the requirements apply' section of Part M - 0.3 This rule applies to domestic as well as to non-domestic buildings. Under the Limits on Application in Part M, Part M does not apply to an...

    SHED POWER

To be honest the size of the conduit will probably be 20/25mm. The sort of size of armoured you would need would be a very tight fit and probably impossible! As adam says it may just fit - if you do go for it then i'd reccomend some lubrication (grease etc) Best of luck!

    wire strippers

I personally use cable croppers to strip cable (and sometimes side cutters for smaller csa's). Alot of people these days are of the opinion that cable strippers are the best option as they do not 'nic' the copper conductor (neither do I although it takes great care on my part not to) I would...

Fair play pensdown - I have to admit this exercise has done nowt but confuse me either! I still think 8.2 applies to all newbuilds but I can't find proof either way (Part M is a long document!) so i'm happy to agree to differ... it's been a good debate! As you say mate Mr 2 jags is always...

Sorry, see what you mean now - I would go by Part M over the OSG as it is part of the Building regs and therefore a statutory document, where as BS7671 & the OSG are not!

'A way of satisfying Requirement M1 would be to provide switches and socket outlets for lighting and other equipment in habitable rooms at appropriate heights between 450mm and 1200mm from finished floor level' This is the only mention I found of how to satisfy this aspect of Part-M and it...

Are the building regs part of 7671?

This was in reference to the building regs and not BS7671! Part M of the Building Regs only applies to a newbuild therefore when re-wiring an existing property, you may site accessories in the same place that they were before!

Ok... I've checked the ODPM website... http://www.odpm.gov.uk/index.asp?id=1130895#P1114_152059 You were right - it only applies to sockets and light switches as far as I can see  I still like a lower DB in a newbuild because I can put it in a safe place and not in the...

Although kids could get to it, as long as it is installed safely (no open holes in the top or side), all they can do is turn the circuits on and off - you'd have to (a) have a padlockable CU or (b) tell the kids to 'blinkin well leave it alone!' If your cables turn out to be too short to move...

Glad someone's drunk - i'm stuck in as we have family visiting (not the drinking type!) - I keep getting moaned at for using the PC! As far as I know, Part M applies to any accessible equipment - Sockets, Light switches, Consumer Units, Cooker Control Units, Showers etc. I may well be...

    Sink - Sockets proximity issues

There is no specific reg but 300mm sounds like a good kind of distance - When dealing with sockets and sinks, a little common sense is required!
