Help. Power cut. Now heating not working. BRRRRR!!!!

Earlier today some idiot with a digger cut a power line and all of the power in the area went off (including our tropical fish tank - argh!) and alarm systems went into overdrive driving us crazy all afternoon. The power eventually came back on but now we cannot get our central heating to work...

    Removing leylandii??

Yea, mine was that height but not quite as wide. If only they'd just trimmed it at 7' high. They do cut out a lot of light (we put patio doors in once we'd cut ours down to soak up the new found sunlight!). Am I right in thinking the roots aren't as big as other trees though?

    Play area dilemma

12"? That's crazy! What loopy beaurocrat thought of that rule? My 'treehouse' would only be as high as my 6' fence yet I need plannng permission? What about the play forts and covered climbing fames you can buy?

    Removing leylandii??

Unfortunately Emilio, beautiful they are but only when planted in the right place and regularly trimmed. When I bought my house the first thing to go from the garden was the huge neglected Leylandi which was bigger than the house, blocked the sunlight and overshadowed and killed the lawn and...

    Play area dilemma

Mine will only be around 1.5m off the ground. I don't have the room for a big one  I was thinking more of a raised deck which wraps around the tree and the existing playhouse anchored to it. Mabe a 3/4 rung rope ladder. My kids are only 2 & 4 so I could always replace it with something...

    Play area dilemma

Thank you! I have wondered about leaf blowers before but thought they might not be any good with gravel as they could suck the gravel up. I'm so glad you have clarified that for me. I will try Lidl but our local branch hardly ever has the items the advertise, but it's worth a try. If not I'll...

    Play area dilemma

Yes the tree house idea had crossed my mind but until I solve the problem of something cheap to put down for them to fall on I can't build that or put up the swings & slide that are still in the garage.

    Play area dilemma

We will also have a lawned area for them to run about. This is just the area for their swings etc. It's the only tree left in the garden and is as tall as the house so I wouldn't fancy cutting that one down. It's also the only thing preventing us being overlooked so it's quite useful. (And the...

    Frongt garden fencing ideas

I personally don't think you can beat a picket fence. I painted mine white and planted an evergreen hedge behind it. I got a lot of admiring comments from neighbours. All the walls around here get sat on or kicked down by bored teenagers. My fence is still standing and looks beautiful, albeit...

    Play area dilemma

I'm desperate to get a play area finished for my kids. Their swing set and slide has been boxed in the garage for 2 years! We have cut down several trees and gravelled a large area this year so they do have somewhere to play. We just need to get the lawned area finished and then there's the...

    Ready made 'dry mix'?

The whole gravelled area is only 5m x 5m so hopefully there won't be much expansion :) This is really only a decorative edge so that the two different coloured gravels don't mix together. We may occasionally drive a car onto the main gravel but it won't be anywhere near the blocks. I did a...

    Ready made 'dry mix'?

Normally I could take a photo but the backlight has gone on my laptop so I'm having to use hubbys which isn't set up for downloading photos, sorry. They're b&q Entente blocks and I'm laying them about 1m in from the edge of the garden so that they make a border (we already have a hedge growing...

    Ready made 'dry mix'?

Cheers Cowboy. I just need some dry weather now! Got stuck in the mud a few times last weekend trying to rotivate/rake the soil!

    Ready made 'dry mix'?

Can I mix it in a bucket? Please bear in mind I am a novice, don't have a trowel, mixer or any tools that you would normally have and I'm hoping to do this as cheaply & easily as possible  The guy at B&Q said just lay them on sand which is what I did at my last house but I filled the gaps...

    Ready made 'dry mix'?

Just looked on their website & they sell Blue Circle mortar mix which you just add water to so I guess that's what I need. It comes in 20kg bags - is this enough for 20 blocks?

    Ready made 'dry mix'?

Can you give me some product names please? I'm hoping to buy the stuff from b&q cos its nearby.

    Ready made 'dry mix'?

Will postcrete do the same job? I already have some bags of that leftover from doing the fence.

    Ready made 'dry mix'?

I'm about to lay some block paving bricks around my front garden as a seperator between two different types of gravel. The soil is very hard and I thought I might get away with laying onto a bed of sand but I'd like to add a layer of dry mix on top just to stabilise it a bit more. Can I buy it...

Concrete base / post / fence

Looks lovely - well done! We did ours green, just one side at the moment but your photo has spurred me on to get the other two sides done this year. Enjoy. :)

cowboy left us with cold shower!

   Yeah, sorry! The shower was running colder which co-incided with the cowboy returning to fit the earth wire. This turned out to be co-incidence and the actual problem is that instead of giving the thermostatic shower a seperate hot/cold feed he has fed it off the bath...
