    what flooring for kitchen?

Don't buy cheap flooring, you get edge curls! Either buy quality vinyl. Or put down a permanent hard eg-tile etc-floor.

    Breaking a cast iron bath

I did mine many years ago, and with no protection- using a sledgehammer in the bathroom- I must have been daft- heads still going boinnnnng. We asked the refuse boys to take it away- they came on saturday quick at the thought of selling it. Got a bit dissappointed I guess :D

    Damp proof membrane

Just to mention- I read somewhere that in a few cases of 'rise' and 'heave' occurring after a long period, the reason was 'some soil reacts with the filling hardcore' (maybe also some types of hardcore too). I opted to put a 1000g sheet under the lot- if I remember right-in the kitchen. Got...

    Cutting square holes in walls

For my money I would try a larger industrial 'angle grinder'- they have about a 10 inch blade- and a good vacumm. Fill the overcuts later.

Jacko- glad you got your control back. I'm no expert but I would say you're right- one is onto neutral. You'll get nothing with both on line!

    Covering earth under house

I have read on another post somewhere, that laying a vapour barrier u/f is just as likely to push the damp towards the walls- therefore making them permanently damp or maybe waterlogged in severe cases. Insulating u/f is much easier if you are replacing the floorboards. Suggest you put more...

    testing Underfloor heating cable

Jacko, I am just suggesting using a sort of 'soft' start to the floor element-about half the normal current is what I would aim for. Estimate the total wattage of the element and try to match that in say an electric fire put into the mains feed circuit in series. If you have a junction box...

    insulating floorboards

You should also be aware that plastic netting, I found, is a fire hazzard. A match on one end and the flame doesn't stop until reaching the other! Will you be plasterboarding the cellar ceiling- should that not be enough?

Springy/bouncy floor problem in mid 1920s semi - help

Also you can just 'sound' the boards out with a hard instrument- if they sound hollow in different parts- you may have dryrot of woodworm. Try as well with a blunt screwdriver pressed into the wood. If it goes in easy- same problem! Best of luck.

    testing Underfloor heating cable

Yes- if you can confirm that it's fed with mains voltage - 230v. Put a one or two bar fire in series with the floor wire and mains -take great care you don't touch any bare wires etc. See if the floor warms ok- partial warmth. You can just check the continuity with just a 100 watt bulb instead...

    Sound Proofing a room.

For my money- for what it's worth- I'd always go for solid-solid. ie heavy breeze blocks or concrete ones- (footings) floor to ceiling . Only thing for bass notes. But you need 5 inch width!!

Have to get my oar in here!! Yes, too true, with resistance wire it has to be the ambient temperature- My guess is- you won't have to warm it up much in order to read correctly!
