    Cleaning Bricks

Hi I need to rebuild part of a garden wall and need to clean the bricks up. Going to knock off the pieces of mortar and was going to use diluted brick acid to clean them up again. They are a sandy finish. Any tips on using the acid or what type of gloves and googles to buy? Cheers!

    Clay Tiles

Thanks for the info, what is delamination? I think I prefer the look of clay tiles. Will look up Hawkins and Dreadnaught. What about Marley and Redland?

    Clay Tiles

Hi, we will be getting roof redone as well as dormer built and bay retiled, so just looking into tile types. Think I would prefer clay to concrete given they last longer. Original tiles are same shape as rosemary though they look redder / darker when compared to a brand new rosemary, which...

    Tiles

thanks, what do you mean by tile and half to create your bond?

    Tiles

OK so what you are saying is that for my bay i probably would not be able to find corner tiles given the angles, so I just look for the normal plain roof tiles.

    Tiles

Thanks. Yes it has five sides e.g. 135 angles. I dont know if they use corner tiles like you mention though. Do roofing merchants still sell them?

    Tiles

Hi, our bay window needs the tiles replacing, they are looking very old and like they have been painted previously. Stupid question maybe, but are the tiles used for bays different to roof tiles? If so, presumably best place to go is a roofing merchants to see the different types.

    Head Height

Ah so, by having the door to the left or right also aides the safety. And you would open the door and step into the room.

    Head Height

That's really helpful Tony thank you and sounds like a real solution to the problem. I haven't seen anything written before indicating if you could have the landing a step down from the room. Given I am starting with 215cm and the rise of the step would be 20cm makes me think 2m is achievable...

    Head Height

To clarify I would want to add a small dormer yes. Whilst the space won't be huge and would have a low ceiling it would be a great benefit to us. Even without a dormer it would be of use to us. Question is whether we can meet regs for top of stairs 1.9/2m). Not sure about if 1.9m only applies...

    Head Height

The space height is 215cm from top of ceiling joist to underside of ridge beam. Thanks for the all the replies and point taken about not DIYing. My main concern is whether I can achieve the required head height at top of stairs in order to get regs sign-off. If we got this, then we would not...

    Head Height

Hi I wonder if someone could tell me what amount of space is actually taken up with insulation, floor joists, plasterboard, floorboards etc when doing a loft conversion. I cant actually find what it would total, just lots of varying opinions on what original head height you need start with -...

    Removing Rsj

Ah that finally makes sense. Couldn't work out how above walls and roof could be supported while you remove Rsjs.

    Removing Rsj

What are implications if joists are sitting on the wall above the existing rsjs or Not?

    Removing Rsj

Thanks for the replies. So it is possible. How do the supports work and does it matter that the brick wall above is an external wall / back of the house, in terms of putting supports in from that side also?

    Removing Rsj

If an rsj is already in place, for example if the kitchen at the back of a semi detached house has been extended to the side by taking out part of the side wall on ground floor, is it possible for the supporting rsj to be removed and replaced if you wanted to do a back extension and needed a...

    Shelving

Will probably use the typical scaffold board brackets made of steel. Two for a 1.2 metre length looks pretty standard so 4 for just less than three metres should be fine I imagine. It's plaster board but there is no gap between it and the breeze block wall - dot and dabbed. So I will just use...

    Shelving

Looks good. Did you just store them flat on top of each other. I will probably stain with water based then use a couple of coats of danish oil.

    Shelving

True. I did end up using water based stain on pine and got a non orangey good result, and then oiled it.
