    Loft modification

I am a structural engineer and would agree with comment above. Do not cut out the horizontal ties unless it has been checked out by a SE. Agree also re the floor. Floor loading is 6 times ceiling loading and suitable mods will be required. Steve

    Point Load on Strip Foundation

To be honest it seems quite a major supporting column this. I would advise get it checked out by a structural engineer. Better to do it before than 3 months down the line when its starting to crack.

    Point Load on Strip Foundation

Hi I am a structural engineer so this is my field. If we are talking mass concrete unreinforced you should assume a 45 degree spread thru the strip. If the strip is reinforced the load can be spread further. To advise further i would need to know the thickness of the strip and what the...

    Big joist notch - worried

Agree totally. These people are not structural engineers and should not be doing things to contradict BR's. Does smack of incompetance.

    Big joist notch - worried

Ha yeah. What you have seen is a typical 3 pin arch or to a lesser extent a portal frame. Both these are stiffened by the column with the highest stresses at the eaves or connection between rafter and column. Structures such as these can be "pinned" at the apex with no bending at this point...

    Big joist notch - worried

Firstly I am a qualified structural engineer so I guess am best placed to give you a practical reply. Secondly it makes a big difference where along the span the notch is. At midspan its at its worst location as the timber stresses are at a maximum. Notching towards the support is much...

    Should I turn valve on?

Yeah I have read on here about balancing the system. Somehow think there is more to it. Rads upstairs are very hot (cant hold hand on them for long) downstairs are ok medium heat. Boiler dial is set to '3'

    motorised valve - 3 way

Yeah really easy. I used a mirror and a torch to find the screw holding it on. DONT FORGET TO TURN ELECTRIC OFF BEFORE STARTING. Make a note of all electrical conns before disconnecting so you can connect new head.

    Should I turn valve on?

Cheers again, As you prob know these valves take some turning and have asked the wife and kids and they havent touched it. Pump is very quiet, never been noisy. Poor circulation could be reason for the different temps. Its like a sauna upstairs! Was thinking of fitting TRV's to cool it...

    Should I turn valve on?

Hello there. I am looking at some ch problems I have been having (hot rads upstairs, med hot rads downstairs, one rad downstairs not working etc etc!) Decided to draw up the pipe diagram so i can understand what does what. The small water tank in the loft - there is a 15mm pipe @ btm...
