Might there be asbestos on my floorboards? (Ed.)

By coincidence, I had experience of asbestos bitumen last year when I had to have a property surveyed and an asbestos management plan put in place. First off, asbestos bitumen was around 8% asbestos, not 1%. Over time it dries out and becomes brittle rather than sticky. However, even in it's...

    Ring main troubleshooting

Sorry, question from the audience ... Looking at that photo, is the supply coming into the isolator then feeding the three breakers, or is it feeding the RCCB which then feeds the breakers?

Cable getting discoloured / lifespan of cables

That's a strange one. The discolouration, as pointed out, is oxidation which is usually caused by the presence of moisture or heat. I'm surprised stranded cable has been used over such a long run. It will have a lower current carrying capacity but unless the pump is a beast, I wouldn't have...

    Cityfibre and location of ONT

I spoke to CityFibre and discussed what I was after. They were fairly relaxed about it and happy to run through notches or holes in joists provided they're relatively straight. Also happy to run 25m from the OTU through the house if I want. Only stipulation was to allow for a bend radius of...

    Digital Shower - Reuse Existing

Her gripe is mainly setting the temp since I like cooler showers than her. Water pressure is fine, and I spotted Mira do a digital for higher pressure/combi which is why I asked the orginal question.

What is causing damp around my window?

I'm still gonna say roof leak. If you're feeling adventurous, get up into the attic and into the eves when it's chucking it down and see if you can spot rain tracking down a roof truss. Often that leak is way higher up than you first thought.

    Professional Re-Wire... How much mess?

Don't go for the cheapest quote. Definitely go for a sparky with an apprentice. Sounds like a week to do the job. Sparky will chase in the cables but won't fill afterwards so, as suggested earlier, get them to price the job subbing out the plastering so you only have one throat to choke if it...

What is causing damp around my window?

Given where the moisture is appearing, I'd hazard a roof problem. Looks like rain might be running down the inside of the cavity rather than blown through gaps in the sealant. When the soffits and facias were replaced, where the old ones removed or were the new ones just nailed over?

Where to Put Fixings in a New Frame

Just for the sake of it .... The old door And the new door Took a bit longer than I planned, but I had to replace the concrete sill with discontinued imperial bricks. Quite by chance a neighbour was having an extension built and were happy to swap some for a tub of Heros. Other "fun" was...

    Digital Shower - Reuse Existing

Hope this is a simple one to answer ... SWMBO grumbles about our thermostatic shower (fed from the combi) and has got wind of digital ones. Given the heads in our current shower do the job and I have plenty of space to fit/hide the pump part, a) is it possible to just buy the pump/controller...

    Cityfibre and location of ONT

Equally why would I drill any hole when the existing cables run in notches in the tops of the joists. Or I could drill 5mm holes to thread 4mm fibre. If the installer fits the connector before installing the cable, then a 14mm hole would be needed to pass a SC/APC through. In any event, conduit...

    Cityfibre and location of ONT

I'm very reluctant to go drilling 25mm holes through joists to fit tubing just to thread a 4mm fibre. The conduit does nothing to add mechanical protection. Bottom line is this thread has given me areas to research and it'll be down to a conversation with the installers whether I go ahead or not.

    Cityfibre and location of ONT

There's already mains cables in the run so plenty of space for a fibre

    Cityfibre and location of ONT

Installers won't enter attics unless they're habitable spaces. They're all too scared of spiders I suppose.

    Cityfibre and location of ONT

Yep, the floorboard will be up so not an issue threading it through.

    Cityfibre and location of ONT

Ok, reading up, and assuming CityFibre do the same as Openreach, it looks like they physically splice the fibre rather than use the CSP to hold a SC/APC coupler. Now, conduit. We talking the corrugated flexi tube stuff electricians use, or the 20mm white tube telecoms use that I've seen in...

    Cityfibre and location of ONT

Do you speak from experience? Surface mount trunking is a non-starter since a straight run would only take it to the other side of the room.

    Cityfibre and location of ONT

Plan would be to run it under the floor. I can easily prepare a route for that. My assumption is they terminate the external armoured fibre optic to a box mounted outside by the entry point then connect a short patch fibre optic from the box to the ONT inside. I'm sort of thinking that if I...
