    Cable Type Suitable for Outdoor

I'm planning to add a remote PIR sensor to an existing outside light. The cable will run 5m approx 3m high along a an external wall so will be inaccessible. I'm going to use 3 core and earth. Question is, is the usual grey (6243Y?) suitable for external use, or should I be looking for something...

Light switch, just two red wires

If the switch had been metal, Sort of. The risk is that a metal faced switch develops a fault e.g the screw just nicks the live wire, and makes the face live too. First thing you know about it is the RCD tripping. If it had been a metal switch, it would have needed an earth wire connected to...

    Testing Double Glazed Unit

Thanks. It's quite a thought that most folk think of DG as fit and forget, not fit and replace every couple of decades. Then again, with folk changing houses, it's unlikely they know how old their windows are. Makes you think twice about energy efficiency.

Does Chimney Flue Bridge the Cavity?

1970s detached house with a fireplace on the ground floor party wall. Would the flue have bridged the cavity in any way? My gut feeling is not. Rules out thermal bridging, fire risk to next door, ditto escape of flue gases if it were to crack. Chimney position seems to agree with option 2 but...

    Testing Double Glazed Unit

Is there any way to test if a DG unit has degraded? I know the standards allow for a percentage leak of the internal gas per year, but I'm wondering if one particular unit has failed. It doesn't show any condensation or other signs of failure.

    ABV for 42mm pipes

System was fitted in the early 90s before ABVs were wide spread. There have been instances when the TRVs have closed off enough to force the hot water out the overflow on the roof. Crossed my mind having an ABV added might help.

    ABV for 42mm pipes

That coming from someone who asked what an ABV was?

    ABV for 42mm pipes

I'd have thought if the boiler has such big feed and return pipes, the bypass would have been a beefier thing than the usual 22mm, but hey, what do I know.

    Renting out Mum's house

If you want to get a handle on the cost of the rewire, think £75 for each socket point, £50 per light, £50 per switch, £100 per cooker point/electric shower. It's a guess. Chasing in solid masonry walls it time consuming. Chasing in plasterboard much easier. Expect the work to take 3 to 5 days...

    ABV for 42mm pipes

Big conventional boiler, no ABV in the system afaik. Are they readily available for 42mm pipes?

    Identifying a Seal

I haven't stripped out the offending sections yet, but they're heavily overpainted. AQ124 did cross my mind too, but I think it would be out of keeping with the other windows. I'll have another look though when the draught annoys me as the weather turns cooler.

    Identifying a Seal

Perfect, thanks! Now I know what terms to search with.

    Identifying a Seal

This is a seal in a wooden framed window. I've found a section that's damaged but I'll be darned if I can find out what it is. Anyone here able to identify it?

    3 Phase Supply Install Cost

Ok, bit of a wet finger in the air ... House supply is a single phase tapped off the 3 phase that runs down the other side of the street. Think dig hole in the verge to expose supply junction, trench across the road to run replacement cable, make good. Road is the dead end of a cul-de-sac so no...

    12V & 5V 'Structured Cabling'?

Perhaps I'm missing the point, but the idea of using high voltage is to lower the current requirements and voltage drop doesn't become a defining issue. Also, the mains can be regarded as an infinite supply with no internal impedance since no matter how hard you load it in your house, the...

Electric car and is this theft?

As the charger is supplied by a third party and added to their network of public charge points (perhaps with limited access hours), assume the user is charged something like 60p/kWh. The railway is supplying the juice, so the agent is going to be paying something like cost plus 20%. Potentially...

How to Open This (old cast iron access point)

It's very old. Cast iron no doubt. Hasn't been opened in at least 30 years, maybe 100 years. Has been overpainted numerous times. Any advice how to undo those bolts without shearing them??

    Remote Temperature Alarm

Sadly the houses have large gardens so there's no reliable wi-fi I can piggyback. No pipes in the loft. Can't recall any building I've been in having pipes in the roof space. Would love to do Option 2. Haven't had a Pi project in awhile, but just don't have the time this year. You've reminded...
