    Widening knock through on gable

The only requirement is for something to hold up the end of the 152 x 89mm UB shown in the second photo. That's why I wondered if I should frame it out in timber instead - I have a surplus of 170mm by 50mm timber like a stud wall and would prefer to work in timber - e.g. a beam made of 4x...

    Widening knock through on gable

Hi, I've had a change of plan on the knock-through into our new extension. We'd planned to knock out the bottom of a 2.1M wide window (as shown by the red lines below) and then use this to form a corridor and a door. Having now got a better feeling for the space, this isn't going to result in...

    Roof construction queries

I don't see much point to the ceiling joists other than to act as a storage platform, assuming the wall plates are well secured. If it was my garage I'd knock a couple out and fit some kind of pull-down staircase for easy access to the storage.

    Double story planning change

You could break up the slabby look on the gable end by building in a bricked up window - just a panel of bricks recessed 20mm.

    Location/Height of new unvented cylinder

Hi guys, I'm thinking through the layout of our new extension, which includes re-doing the airing cupboard and old hot water tank. I want to get an unvented cylinder fitted to help with the upstairs shower pressures (currently low head gravity fed), and have done some pressure tests on the...

    Chopsaw

I'll PM you the details. There are normally a few on eBay/etc so there may be one more local to you. If you buy a used one from a decent brand you'll probably find it'll hold it's value then you can get your money back in a year or so.

    Chopsaw

I bought a used DeWalt double-bevel sliding beast for around £250 for the same reason. It's done me proud on two extensions and there's nothing it won't cut (something like 50 degree bevel both ways, 60 degree mitre both ways) but annoyingly I feel it's too big to keep long term. If you're...

    Largest extension under pd (merged)

Mine is 50% but a day spent surfing the LA planning website made it clear that this is just a starting point for negotiation. Because its measured by floor area there are various arguments that some enlargements don't result in a corresponding increase in bulk.

Google "permitted development loopholes ppt" - its a useful guide on how to take the p*as and fall out with your neighbours.

Fitting 550mm wide Velux between 600mm centre joists

They're meant to be tiles but as they're on 10 week back order I have no idea what they actually look like.

Fitting 550mm wide Velux between 600mm centre joists

I didn't think I'd have room for the collar in this scenario, so would probably foam it in a as you suggest. The rafters are 170, and I'll have 100mm of PIR on the other side of the reveal. I'm not sure how much they will extend below really. I'm happy to risk some condensation anyway, and...

Fitting 550mm wide Velux between 600mm centre joists

I think we're all talking at crossed purposes because of what I understand 'below the rafter' to mean. I can now see that what's meant (in my world) is 'it overlaps the rafter by an inch or two'. Going back to my original question, this time with the aid of an excellent diagram... is the...

Fitting 550mm wide Velux between 600mm centre joists

My impression is that with 65mm (Grovesbury) tiles on 25mm battens, and using 170mm deep rafters, then the top of the Velux would be roughly level with the top of the tiles, and probably wouldn't fully cover the sides of the rafters when viewed underneath?

Fitting 550mm wide Velux between 600mm centre joists

Interestung. My rafters are 170mm deep. Would there be any rafter left exposed?
