I did that on purpose to see if you were paying attention  No, I meant screwing screws - not screwing nails.

    Plug Maker

I'm currently building a deck out of the standard softwood decking boards you can get anywhere. 1/. When screwing nails into the deck boards, should I drill a pilot hole first? 2/. Can you use a plug maker for the fascia boards. I am using a deck board as a fascia, I have seen joiners use...

    Expanding bolts

I've finally managed to fix the ledger board. I found some 'frame fixings', they are like a long raw plug that are secured in the ledger and the wall. I also had some old slabs that I have built up under the ledger at both ends, which fit tightly under the ledger. Problem with the frame...

    Expanding bolts

I've tried again this morning to fix the ledger board using expansion bolts, I got into a terrible mess. I have 6 bolts to fix into the wall; 2 kept turning, 2 wouldn't go all the way home and 2 held it good. I am going to pin it as Ladylola says, and then dig holes and cement a couple of...

    Expanding bolts

Has anyone got any tips on how to fit expanding bolts into brickwork please? Should the hole be drilled into the mortar joint if possible? Any tips appreciated.

No whacker plate - no MOT type 1

Yes, light foot traffic. I will definately bed on morter. I can tamp down the 5:1 ballast/cement, then 30mm mortar. How deep should I go with the ballast cement; 50mm or 75mm. Many thanks.

No whacker plate - no MOT type 1

I want to put a few slabs down to make a short path, very light traffic. After reading posts on this forum I believe I need to compact about 50 to 75mm of MOT type1, because I am on clay soil. I don't want to hire a whacker plate for a small area and I can't buy small amounts of MOT type...

    Curved path

Apart from the raised edges being a trip hazard, it would also create a problem when I'm mowing the lawn as I'd need a strimmer to go along the edges. Ideally the top of the grass should be 15mm above the top of the finished path so the mower can glide over. However, in certain circumstances...

    Varnishing a counter

Thanks TheDec. How much should I thin the first coat; 10%? and with what? I think I'll go with clear varnish, how many coats would be normal; 3 , 4, 5?

    Varnishing a counter

Thanks TheDec. Here's a picture, would you say this is Beach that was treated with a clear varnish? Is there a certain brand I should chose, should I use Polyurathane, or solvent based or whatever? Many thanks.

    Varnishing a counter

I've been asked to varnish the counter in a local shop. It's a very light colour, maybe just a clear varnish was applied years ago. What is the best way to bring this back to life please?

    Frongt garden fencing ideas

I agree with JohnD - many years ago I was staining my fence and decided to paint the concrete posts as well. They really do blend in well, they're a bit faded now but still better than seeing steely grey concrete. Obviously masonary paint is the one to use.

    Curved path

Thanks Wabbitpoo, how will the edge setts be held in place? I guess I will still need a brick edge, or something to hold it all in place.
