    Telephone extension

Thanks to a rather helpful SKY engineer I now have a cat 5 and telephone extension in my bedroom. This provides a phone point, and the ability to run SKY anytime plus. At the minute it's just cable coming in along the floor, and he's used the little termination boxes with inbuilt cables to...

    Outdoor light

The previous owners of our house 'fitted' two outside lights. Their idea of fitting was drilling a hole for the mains cable, pushing it through the wall and sticking a 13amp plug on the end which went into a socket! Obviously I've removed these as they were an eyesore if nothing else, but...

    Dual F type faceplate issues

Thanks for the info. I had one of the 'dodgy' faceplates. It was sold to me by Maplin, cheeky gits! I've got rid, and have ordered F type barrels that I'll use to make a custom plate. Basically just one length of cable joined to another, albeit with a blanking plate in the middle, fixed to the wall.

    Dual F type faceplate issues

Has anyone fitted an F type faceplate and found it has damaged their LNB? As soon as I fitted it to my second SKY feed I was getting no signal messages. However it settled and both feeds worked. Now it's completely gone. Is it something I've done, or just coincidence?

    Paper feature wall

You'll need to look at whatever paper you buy carefully. It will state when the pattern repeats (think that's the correct term) From that, and by looking at it you will then have to calculate how many strips you need. But here's the catch; not all the strips can be cut sequentially from the...

    1st Time Laying Solid Wood

Thanks for that. I'd never have thought of that to be honest. :D

    1st Time Laying Solid Wood

Decided to go for engineered flooring, mainly so I don't have the problems of trying to tie it to the underfloor. Plan is to float it on Timbermate Excel underlay, but not sure if I'll have to lay ply first. It's pretty ropey:

Thanks mate, all makes perfect sense. I'll take a gander at that store

    1st Time Laying Solid Wood

Thanks mate. I've looked at the engineered option and to be honest some of the prices are higher or the same. Does anyone know of a god supplier? I'm after some smoked oak roughly 3.6 square metres. I will lay some 6mm ply though as the chipboard is shocking. I ripped up the laminate today...

    1st Time Laying Solid Wood

Sorry Steve  The current floor is laminate on top of chipboard. It is a suspended floor with the chipboard laid over the joists. I'm looking to lay solid oak in a smoked finish that is brushed and lacquered. The board size is 125mm, 18mm thick and average board length is 700mm I'm...

Skirtings - To Scribe or Not?

Well this is how it turned out: Room was skimmed, skirting and facings done and then decorator came in. I went with a 45 mitre cut and in all honesty the finish is great; very little filler needed at all. These damn recycled mirror doors on the other hand.......... They have been a...

    1st Time Laying Solid Wood

I've got 4 square meters to cover in my hall and thinking of going for solid wood. Mainly as it'll be cheap due to size, but good quality. Having never done this before is it a nightmare? Skirting and facing will be off and I can ensure I have access to the correct tool(s) to cut out the...

    Odd Size Radiators

Well...... I managed to buy two Kudox radiators from B&Q for £40 due to the 15% off plus a further 20% off for signing up to their DIY Club. I've coupled those to Myson Petite TRVs and Lock shields. I've been very lucky that the new valve tails effectively take up the difference in...

    BTU rating

It's a strange system, as to be honest some of it is old, and some new. I believe the previous owner's deceased husband was a plumber and he replaced the boiler, a radiator and some pipe work. However all the other radiators are quite old, and the lock shield valves have the old Bakelite...

    BTU rating

Thanks. I'm going to stick that in my bathroom towel rail radiator as it appears the easiest one to put it in having the drain plug on the top. With regard to flushing what's the easiest way to do this? I was thinking connecting a piece of pipe onto a radiator then to my outside tap and letting...

    BTU rating

Thanks guys. With regards to changing the valve it looks like I have 10mm pipe. So my plan is to: 1. Turn off combi 2. Isolate all radiators (Bar the two that are currently removed) 3. Drain down using the drain point which I've found. It's located on the other side of the wall to...

Skirtings - To Scribe or Not?

Thanks for the info. As it happens I decided to cut an internal at 45 degrees to see how it looked. All the internals actually look good and fairly true; put it this way, I'll be using more filler and tearing our more hair if I try to scribe

Thanks guys. Currently all radiators just have lockshields on them, there's no TRVs I can see. I have a Bosch Worster Greenstar Combi boiler with a digital thermostat. I'm undecided yet on whether I'll fit TRVs or not?
