The previous owners of our house 'fitted' two outside lights. Their idea of fitting was drilling a hole for the mains cable, pushing it through the wall and sticking a 13amp plug on the end which went into a socket!

Obviously I've removed these as they were an eyesore if nothing else, but it's left me without lights. So I'm planning on fitting two. What is the correct way? Can I simply fit a junction box in my lighting ring and run a feed off of that without a switch? Assuming I go for a sensor light. Or do I have to factor in a switch?

Any help greatly appreciated.

It would be sensible to have some functional form of isolation for the lights.
So you could take a feed from the lighting circuit, you will need Phase/live, neutral and CPC/earth.
This can then be dropped to a switch/isolator and then feed to the lights i would also recommend that a two pole isolator switch was used, so if a fault occurred on the lights both phase and neutral can be isolated.
Other option would be taking a double pole switched fused connection from a socket circuit. Down size fuse to 3A-5A.

Think about the wattage of the lights.

If they are, in effect, just 2 more lights like you have indoors then fine, but if they are high powered floodlights then there might not be enough capacity in the lighting circuit for them.
