    Driveway Gradient help needed...

No, but the landowner agrees that the work can be done, I have offered to pay for it because I want to get it done and not spend months procrastinating about shares of cost. They will later resurface other parts of the drive at their cost and isn't a concern to me.

    Driveway Gradient help needed...

We could, but the driveway needs resurfacing anyway and this seemed like a more direct solution.

    Driveway Gradient help needed...

To see traffic to the left when you join the highway. There is a 1m fence on the other side and the view that was is perfect, we want to achieve the same effect to the left. By raising the surface of the drive, we'll be able to see over it. Problem (mostly) solved. (Hopefully).

    Driveway Gradient help needed...

We access our house from a driveway shared between 3 houses. There is a old wall to one side that is not owned by any of us and is too high. I have talked to the owner of the wall and they are not very keen to allow the height to be sympathetically altered, even at my expense, so we're on to...

    Old Septic Tank...

We have a 1950's property that is served by a Septic Tank, I'm certain it's the one that was installed when the property was built. It looks to be brick built as far as I can see, though can't be certain what's going on underground. I'm no expert, but it's condition worries me. It was sited in...

    Room Stat Wiring...

I was hoping you'd show up. It turned out not to be a suitable controller for my awkward system. I think due to it being the v2 Nest with no provision for Hot Water. So I do what I do best, just forgot all about it (until now!)

    Room Stat Wiring...

Or have I really c'ocked up and this controller won't control the hot water?!

    Room Stat Wiring...

I wanted to replace an old Drayton SM2 with something a bit better, the existing room stat is on the blink and the SM2 ticks very loudly. This will probably be the last year for this boiler, so this was only intended to be a short-term fix. I'm a pretty competent DIY'er, but I think I've bitten...

    Acceptable Service Access...

Good point. Though, without the effort to prove whether it is or isn't, I'm thinking of preventing future complications. Is there an arbitrary width that's seen as acceptable for this purpose? 500mm? Less?

    Acceptable Service Access...

I have a block of about a dozen Housing Association Garages on one of my boundaries. My plot is large and obtaining the exact position of the boundary has proven very difficult, plus I don't think it's really necessary to be that granular. The HA don't really care much about it, which I...

Removal of Chimney Breast - Building Control?

The irony of all this is that the neighbour in question has a party wall extension with a whole soffit/gutter overhang that will prevent my daughter from carrying our the extension she'd like to do! One things for sure, I'm glad I live in a detached property.

Removal of Chimney Breast - Building Control?

Yes, she's already mentioned the work, as I advised her to check the status of the chimney on their side. I had suggested to my daughter that we draught up a letter detailing the proposed work, showing the design, offering some flexibility around them about when the noisy work takes place and...

Removal of Chimney Breast - Building Control?

What have I started?! Whether we need to do anything within the PWA or not, a 'comfort letter' will be written in any case, laying out what work is planned, timings and so on. My daughter gets on with her neighbour OK. If PWA is needed, we're not looking to circumvent that by the way.

...which we wouldn't be doing. :D We'll await further instruction from the SE...

Removal of Chimney Breast - Building Control?

I greatly appreciate the advice regarding PWA, it looks as though we need to ask our Structural Engineer some more questions, but I would hope that he would take into account those matters and, it would appear, advise accordingly. Still not sure on the original question about Building Notice...

Removal of Chimney Breast - Building Control?

I imagine perhaps he will then when he returns with the design solution. We touched on it during the meeting, but didn't thoroughly batten it down. So, we can expect him to confirm whether or not BC are needed?

Removal of Chimney Breast - Building Control?

My Daughter lives in a semi-detached Bungalow and would like to remove the Chimney Breast, below the roofline. She has spoken with a structural engineer who is in the process of designing a solution and is aware of the need to comply with the party-wall scenario. But, she can't get a clear...

    Gas Boiler Room Vent...

There are no flyscreens currently. I was asking about whether they're acceptable. I now know they're not. If you re-read my original post you'll also see that there is a lower compartment vent. The room previously doubled up as a tatty, overloaded storage room and that lower vent may not have...

    Gas Boiler Room Vent...

That's very true, but it's been through numerous checks with this window scenario and although the heating engineers don't like it, they have never condemned it. Surely I can't over ventilate? I'm thinking of putting in a big vent grille in order to over compensate at least, but can you use...

    Gas Boiler Room Vent...

I'm currently living in an old house, with a fairly antiquated CH system, the heart of which is an 'Ideal Mexico 2' boiler, which sits in a Boiler Room in the middle of the house. The house is a weird design, having been through some changes over the years, ending up with what I assume was once...
