Turned off street stopcock, water still flowing

No. The heating and hot water is via a standalone combi boiler.

Turned off street stopcock, water still flowing

Thanks for the advice. I just rang Southern Water and they said they'd get someone out but only within 10 working days. Which leaves me a bit stuck. Is there any way I can shut off water to only the basin taps in the meantime?

Turned off street stopcock, water still flowing

Hi, am trying to change bathroom basin and taps. There is no stopcock to be found inside the house (only been here a year and never had a need to look before), no isolator valves on basin pipes and, having taken off bath panel, not on bath taps either. So I've pulled up the trap in front of...

Heating OK, no water downstairs, only cold upstairs

Actually, could it be the outside tap has frozen the pipes leading into the kitchen? It was covered but have just checked and the cover has come off and the tap inlet completely blocked with ice. Should I go at the outside tap with a hairdryer or the inside/kitchen ones first?

Heating OK, no water downstairs, only cold upstairs

Not rightly sure where they come in, only moved in a few months ago and unlike most well-organised people, I never think to check until I have an emergency!

Heating OK, no water downstairs, only cold upstairs

Hi, just trying to isolate a problem. The shower and upstairs hot water taps do not work at all but the cold tap does. Downstairs there is no water running whatsoever. The heating is working fine. It's a combi boiler and there are no lights flashing (though the hot water light is off...

Trying to remove taps on mixer unit

Hmm. I've given it another go with a very small screwdriver trying to lever it up but it just seems to be taking chunks of plastic - the hot and (green) filter taps the same, no give at all.

Trying to remove taps on mixer unit

This is probably very basic - but how do I remove the cold tap on the mixer unit to fix a leak? Pic here: http://imgur.com/BNIXr.jpg I would have assumed prising off the blue circle and finding a nut/screw beneath but it doesn't seem to come off under a little pressure and I don't want to...

Alternative to heavy belt sanders for floors?

My mother lives at the top of a five-storey house and I want to sand the floorboards in a couple of rooms... but I don't fancy lugging those heavyweight belt sanders up all those flights of stairs. Is it realistic to sand floors using a decent orbital, or is there an alternative or more...

Average price to deck over a garden?

My garden's on a bit of a slope and the easiest thing appears to be timber decking across it. Anyone know the rough price to have someone in to do it? Garden's about 17ft square - obviously prices will vary quite a lot, but if anyone's had any done and can let me the know cost, that'd be helpful!

    More tree assassination!

Unlike Scoby on another thread, I would - I'm afraid - like to finish off a few tree stumps and ivy roots/brambles chemically. The nearest thing I've seen in B&Q is Deep Root which I'm sure won't be powerful enough. Anyone know what I should be getting to finish these stumps and brambles off for...

    Light fittings driving me mad!!

Not the electrics, I have those connected and working no problems. My main problem is that three of my lights have fallen from the ceiling (saved from gravity by the flex). On two of them, the plaster/wood/whatever was holding it to the ceiling has come away. On a third light, the ceiling is...

Best materials to use on sloping garden

I have taken the turf off my garden with a view to slabbing some of it. However, there is a considerable slope and without the skills to build a retaining wall, I am wondering if there's any way of keeping the slope but still tidying up the garden. I was going to put a circular pattern of...

    Light switch won't turn off

Have just replaced a light switch in my back room with a dimmer. There were lots of wires in there, so have just replicated the connections from the old switch. All worked ok in the back room. However, on the other side of the wall (in the hall) is a switch that controls the downstairs hall...
