Which blown in Insulation is best? 50mm cavity

do you have Wickes over there?, i got my largish 4 bedroom house walls done with Rockwool for around £400. Seem to be thorough to, I watched them carefully. Rockwool is totally inert and a better bet than any thing made from plastic/chemicals, IMHO

Replacing back boiler for condensing boiler

I was not concerned about the 'efficiency ' crap .Just to have a nice wholesome boiler to last me another 20 years with out the palaver they have on this site. so a 'recent' old style would be the ticket. Floor mounted CF with 80,000BTU( output)

    microbore - balancing rads

I have read the FAQ re balancing, but they do not seem applicable to microbore . I have two manifolds under bedroom floor which feed all rads. the manifold feeding rads at the rear of the house has 18 pipes so it would be 9 rads. One rad will not heat up properly. I have replaced the twin...

    Shower draining proplem

Don't forget the maths, the inverse square law applies, (even though it is round) so flow goes up by the square of the increase. I'm not talking c*ap am I? Youvshould have more fall, I installed a ground floor shower cubicle and raised it off th eground, but you have to step in it of course...

    i smell gas

I reckon the 'flame test' was a common feature of old plumbers. My uncle taught me plumbing and that's how he tested for leaks! erk. He did live till he was 83- then died of a stroke, but I never followed his example- washing up liquid was safer, or now of course there is the wonbderful sprays.

    Old pipework!

you are lucky. Some years ago my wife's friend's dad, who had no sense of smell, was a DIYer- until one day he cut off a piece of pipe that was in his way when laying floor. You guessed- it was a gas pipe in an old terraced house. This gassed him and he died. I am very wary of pipes/wires-...

    BCO inspection needed??

classic post :D It is always best to get BC approval to any alteration to a house, however minor, as it will ease the sale. The plans do not have to be elaborate , for a simple job a sketch will do showing the works. But you do need to be sure there are no loads on the wall removed, is there...

    radiators

well, assuming that the pipework to these rads has not neen changed/flattened etc, then I would keep draining water off the farthest one until you get hot water, could be some time too. It is out the loop and needs coaxing back into the hot water loop. I had this once on one rad, and I drained...

    how old

Don't bother with BG , they will soon want to sell you a 'new' improved boiler, which will go wrong after 3 years . stick with the old technology. I got a thermocouple for my Ideal Standard made in 1977, so parts are around.
