    Telephone extension stopped working

Hi again, Just wanted to complete the story with the final (somewhat unexpected) final diagnosis on this problem. On rigging up a temporary extension I found that the phones still didnt work. Taking it all apart one piece at a time it transpires that one of my broadband microfilters was...

    Telephone extension stopped working

ok then have done the continuity test this morning and all cores are intact the cable is fine after all! So it looks like the culprit is the faceplate of the master socket. Looking at the blades of the idc terminals they look quite far apart compared to those of terminals 1 and 6 which havent...

    Telephone extension stopped working

Thanks Softus I had considered doing continuity test but wasnt sure which terminals to test between. The boxes are in different rooms so i cant test the two ends. Will have a look for the new faceplate in the meantime. Thanks.

    Telephone extension stopped working

Hi all, I have an extension (four core cable) running from the BT master socket to a slave socket in the living room for a cordless phone and broadband connection. Up to last week this was all running smooth then for no apparent reason the line has gone dead. I tested the phone in the master...

    co-axial cables

Hi All, Many thanks for all the advice, As securespark correctly says the cable is connected to the aerial so It cant just be cut off the old TV and replaced with a new one. It is good old thick co-axial cable so may well cut off the plug and re-wire it if the twisting with pliers doesnt...

    co-axial cables

Hi All, Ok so this is perhaps not strictly electrical but here goes. After 22 years of loyal service our television has finally given up the will to live, however after all this time of being plugged into the back of the tv the co-axial cable from the aerial is well and truly stuck in the...

Bizzarre connections in old light switch

Thanks Plugwash, The replacement switch I have bought is a plastic one, thogh not sure that the screw lugs are insulated - will have to check. The screw sizes shouldnt be a problem as need to replace the backbox at the same time as current switch sits in a vertical two-gang box, so have...

Bizzarre connections in old light switch

The current faceplate for the switches has become damaged hence the need for the replacement. In the interim before I can get the whole installation checked, will it be relatively safe to wire up the new switch with the red wire connecting the two L1 terminals (i.e the commoned live referred...

Bizzarre connections in old light switch

It certainly looks like an older version of the current MK Grid plus system, with the separate switches, mounting box and faceplates.

Bizzarre connections in old light switch

From what I have seen when I took the faceplate off, it looks like you are correct about the lack of earth. What do you mean by "Class I fittings"? (sorry im not 100% up on the terminology)

    Telephone wiring

Hi Kiwibird, The BT linebox is a fairly distinctive design, look at the front of the socket in question, if it is a BT linebox it will have the following characteristics; The box itself is approx 8.5 x 8cm. The lower half of the front panel is held in place by two screws positioned...

Bizzarre connections in old light switch

So just to get this straight, am I correct in thinking that means the live feed from one light is "feeding" power to the live of the second light on the other switch. Or have I totally misunderstood that? Why three core and earth, I thought that was only neccessary for a two-way circuit...

Bizzarre connections in old light switch

Ok thanks for the explanation. As long as that is a legitimate arrangement of wires then thats ok. The wires may actually be red and black (they are covered in a bit of dust so that may well have made them look brown!) Will give them a dust off when I fit the new switch. Thanks.

Bizzarre connections in old light switch

Hi All, Just looking for a bit of advice. I am in the process of renewing some old light switches in my house that have become worn-out. One is a two-gang switch controlling a ceiling light on one switch and a set of wall lights from the second switch. (it is an old MK brand affair in a...
