Telephone extension stopped working

now who is being silly?

Replacing. The. Cable. Won't. Fix. A. Fault. In. The. Master. Socket.

I never said it would did I ( i often wonder do you think people have said something they havent then go off on one, or do you just do it on purpose for self gratification)

You seem to have this skill of twisting peoples words around and implying things they never said for that skill i take my hat off to you.

I said it will be quicker to change the cable and have done with it.
cables do not jump out on their own, i admit you can get bad connections, but the op said it suddenly stopped working, and since we know the master socket is working my money is on a damged cable.

No you didn't, but if you had then you would have been wrong.

I don't care where your "money" is - this isn't a casino, it's a web site on which people can gain knowledge and receive help in solving problems. Your wager, in fact your entire contribution, does nothing to fulfill those aims. In fact, that applies to most of your contributions.

ok then have done the continuity test this morning and all cores are intact the cable is fine after all!

So it looks like the culprit is the faceplate of the master socket. Looking at the blades of the idc terminals they look quite far apart compared to those of terminals 1 and 6 which havent been used. Unfortunately i think that may be down to the cheap little plastic insertion tool we used when doing the initial install. Have got a proper krone type tool now so hopefully next faceplate will last a bit longer!

Unfortunately maplin have helpfully discontinued nte5 sockets from the catalogue so will search on internet as soon as i get a temporary extension sorted to actuall get onto internet!

Hi again,

Just wanted to complete the story with the final (somewhat unexpected) final diagnosis on this problem.

On rigging up a temporary extension I found that the phones still didnt work. Taking it all apart one piece at a time it transpires that one of my broadband microfilters was faulty and this somehow stopped the whole extension from working. Any way with replacement filter in place and all faceplates connected back up its all working again.

Thanks for the help.

change the cable and have done with it.
chances are its been niked, so one spare coere will work untill it goees down, change the whole cable no problem
it will be quicker to change the cable than to find the fault (after a continuity test has been done, which will show that the cable is open cct)

Hmmm had a feeling you might mention that! lol bet you guys are best mates really!

All ribbing aside, squeekykilt, I'm glad you found the fault and that the fix was relatively quick and easy.

Yes im glad too, though I did get very close to renewing the whole cable and nte5 faceplate but thankfully found the real problem in time.

Thanks for the help.

Just in case anybody else reads this & is intrigued about the continuity testing, the principle is, assuming 4 core cable:

disconnect both ends of the cable.

using a multimeter set to continuity, test across all conductors: there should be no continuity.

at one end, join two wires together, noting which colour they are.

do the same with the remaining pair.

Now go to the other end of the cable.

Using the meter set to continuity again, test across the two pairs. You should have continuity across both pairs, but nothing with any other combination.

If you have no continuity where you expect it, this signifies a break somewhere.

If you have continuity without any wires shorted, or continuity between cores not connected, then you have a short somewhere.

This can often crop up where cables are run under threshold strips, get squashed flat over time, the conductors separate from the sheath, then short against the alu strip.

There are ways round this problem without rewiring, if rewiring proves tricky.

If you have a 4 core or 6 core cable, use the process above to find three healthy cores & use those to feed the extension.

Another alternative I have used without problems (indeed has been used by many a BT engineer down the years) is to use two cores ( term's 2 & 5)
and replace the secondary outlet with a master. There is only a need for this method if you have only 2 healthy conductors in the cable.

Some frown on this solution, though.
