Are there standard splice connectors for standard RSJ sizes?

Hello everybody, We're going to make longer steel beams (4-5 m) from shorter (2m) ones in situ in the loft. Beams are 178x102mm. I couldn't find any standard splice connectors suppliers on google, only custom designed. Do the standard splice connectors exist at all?

How do you put RSJ/UB above existing pipework?

Hello everybody, We're doing loft conversion and we will need to use universal beams. There'r existing pipework in the loft (plastic water pipes, copper boiler pipes). How do you put RSJ/UBs over the pipes? Notching doesn't seem an option. Drilling holes in UBs, cutting pipes and re-passing...

Wall Removal plan – is this going to work?

Looks like I didn't explain it properly. Better sketch attached. Briefly - Lounge and Hallway have a common wall - the chimney back wall (CBW) + Wall To be Removed (WTR) attached to CBW over part of its length. The chimney is fully within the Lounge and is to remain intact, and the extruision -...

Wall Removal plan – is this going to work?

Thank you for this very useful feedback - appreciated. Plan and photo from the loft attached. Briefly the IBW partly supports purlin going across the roof (see left sketch), but IBW lenth is only 1.1m while house width >5 m. Purlin also rests on principals (external walls). SE visited last...

Wall Removal plan – is this going to work?

Hello everybody, I plan to remove internal brick wall (IBW). This IBW touches chimney back wall (see photo), which is to remain and serve as load bearing wall for beams in the loft, so it’s important not to damage (break thru) the chimney wall. The plan I have is as follows: 1. Remove plaster...

Loft Conversion: do beams have to be closed up to run joists across them?

I believe that has been done by architect, the builder calls him and ask to calculate this and that, but we never saw the drawings or calculations - only in wording from our builder that architect says we need so many timbers of such a size etc. I strongly hope so - there're 2 joiners working...

    Loft Conversion: beam placement problem

Hello everybody, We’re doing loft conversion with a builder who leads the project and skilled works performed by experienced sub-contractors (roofer, joiners, bricky etc.) As of today the following works done: - Chimney partly removed (down to loft floor level) - Old...

Loft Conversion: do beams have to be closed up to run joists across them?

This doesn't tell me much be I'll pass this to joiners when they come to continue the works, thanks!

Loft Conversion: do beams have to be closed up to run joists across them?

Of course this is a joint wall. I understand that was the orinigal intenstion, but the wall turned out to be only half-a-brick thick, and that didn't work out. Hence joiners went for hangers.

Loft Conversion: do beams have to be closed up to run joists across them?

Thanks Johnny. If the option 1 is OK and the beam ends can be free-hanging - why attach them to neighbours wall on the other half of the loft?

Loft Conversion: do beams have to be closed up to run joists across them?

Design gives you rooms and windows layout and materials to use but not such details as beams and joist location, does it? He is an experienced builder with a few completed loft conversion projects (verified) and a number of very experienced sub-contractors (like roofer and joiners I've seen and...

Loft Conversion: do beams have to be closed up to run joists across them?

The project is frozen at the moment, builder got ill - no one to ask for now. But option 2 is what he was discussing with joiners couple weeks ago. Hence while builder is away - I wanted to double check if that is really necessary to have beams closed up - to be in better position to discuss...

Loft Conversion: do beams have to be closed up to run joists across them?

You are right. The reason I put options 2 is because that's what our builder suggested, so I thought you need to have beam ends restrained or built into something solid, hence option 2. Since on the left - it's the end of the house (free space) - I thought option 2 is a minimum to have. Option...

Loft Conversion: How to deal with crossing beams?

Hello everybody, We're doing loft conversion in a bungalow and the bearing walls configuration we have is shown in the drawing. At couple of places we need to cross beams. Ideally you'd want to cross half them but I was told this is not allowed. According to this Notching and Boring guide the...
