    cross cut papaer shredder

I bought one from WH Smith about a year ago. It was their own brand - Level 5 (I think) - well it is the cross cut one. Cost around £25 and will cut upto around 5 sheets. It also has a shredder for old credit cards. Still going strong after regular use :)

    Tiling a bath panel

Dont know how the professionals would do it but I did my side panel a couple of years ago. I built a wooden frame secured to the bath and the floor. I then cut two pieces of plywood to fit along the side of the bath side by side. These were sized so that the join came between two tiles. Note...

    Floating Shelves

The Ikea ones are made of veneered plywood only a couple of mil thick and are supported by a cantilever type bracket fixed to the wall. There is a weight restriction on them - cant remember if it was in the catalogue or on the packaging itself. Depends how heavy the kitchen things are that...

    Floating Shelves

I know the ones you mean - seen them in Ikea and Homebase and they do have a weight restriction. Cant remember what it is but its not much! I built my own in the kitchen - timber frame with 6mm plywood top and bottom and a strip of wood across the front to hide the edges of the plywood. They...

    Rads wont turn off

How do I know if its a bypass valve or an isolating valve? Yeah - seems to be standard 22mm and is reasonably accessible. Unfortunately I'm not sure what I'm doing hence the questions on the forum. Are you saying it is a job for a plumber?

    Rads wont turn off

Thanks for that ChrisR. Have had a look this morning and there is no pimple on the top of the 3 port - just my luck :( There is however an isolating valve between the 3 port and the HW tank (at least I think its an isolating valve - it has a square square shaft at the top the same as on...

    Rads wont turn off

I have a Stelrad Ideal W RS430 boiler, a wall mounted Honeywell thermostat and a tank mounted Honeywell L641A1005 thermostat. The system is controlled by a Landis and Gyr timer which has separate switches for the CH and HW (on, once, twice, off) although central heating only can not be selected...

    Radiators wont turn off

Sorry to sound thick but I really haven't a clue here  If I understand correctly you are saying: * move the lever to the mid-position which will put the valve in the mid-position. * remove the actuator (the grey box on top of the pipes). Presumably this prises off as I couldn't...

    Radiators wont turn off

Thanks for the quick response Kevplumb. How do we know if it is the valve or the actuator and how do we go about fixing it? Can the valve be operated manually by moving the lever and what position should the lever be in to switch the heating off?

    Speaker wire: cheapo options

I have it on good authority that 2.5mm2 mains cable will give much better results than any cheap speaker wire.

Central heating pipes in concrete floor

Problem is that what I want to secure does not have a very large surface area so I could not use much adhesive. Thanks for the advice on the depth on screed. I will have a think about it over the weekend. To misquote Clint, I suppose the question is - "Do I feel lucky???" Davey

Central heating pipes in concrete floor

Not sure if this question should be in this section, in building or in plumbing but here goes: Our flat is built over a car park and it has a concrete floor. This is presumably a screed laid over a series of concrete beams that are butted together (like floorboards) and visible from the car...

White paint - that stays white

I used B&Qs own brand paint which was called "Ever white" (or something like that) around 12 months ago for the architrave and skirting in the bedroom. It is still pure white today. Advantages - low (almost nil) odour, clean brushes in water, quick drying (about 4 hours between coats if I...

    Yucca Leaf Problem

Thanks Linda and Thermo. The plant is still looking a bit unwell but doesn't appear to be getting any worse. I suspect that over-watering is the problem and I have purchased some moisture indicators from Q&B although I haven't used them yet. Is it okay to feed the plant at this time of...

    Yucca Leaf Problem

Can somebody please help me? I have a Yucca plant indoors - I believe it is called a spineless yucca and it is about five years old. The plant is in front of a window. Recently the ends of several leaves have turned brown - what is causing this? The problem occurs mainly on the top leaves...

I've said it before and I will say it again - Servis appliances are C**P!!! My Servis fridge failed after 13 months and my Servis w/m failed after about 2 years. It cost me £300 for a new fridge but I managed to get the w/m repaired for about £90 :( Is it possible that there is an...
