    Kitchen Worktop damage

Thanks Scrit, I see that Urea Formaldehide is marketed under the name Humbrol Cascamite/Extramite so I might go for that. Thanks again.

    Kitchen Worktop damage

I've been asked to replace a worktop that suffered the same kind of damage. However, in this case it is two worktops running parallel with and butted to each other so as to make up a wide enough top to fit into a window recess ( it's in an old tenement flat). I was thinking about glueing the two...

    Mastic/Sash Windows

    >Because mastic uses oil it absorbs into the surrounding stone or brick and the silicone tends to not stick properly.< That's a good point! In Edinburgh, where I live, hundreds, if not thousands, of tenement flats have had new windows fitted and all the ones I'ved paid attention to have...

Lime mortar? I hadn't thought about that. Thanks.

    Mastic/Sash Windows

A friend has timber sash windows in her tenement flat. The mastic (I think it's burnt sand and linseed oil) is breaking up and falling out. I thought she might be better with a silicone sealant. However, a closer inspection has revealed huge gaps between the windows and the masonry. Even if I...

    uPVC Window Trims

I'm planning on putting new plasterboard over existing plasterboard walls but they will project beyond the window trims. I thought I might be able to purchase new uPVC boards/architraves/trims/whatever which I would then glue onto the existing trims. Has anybody done this? Any problems that I...

    Plasterboard Ceiling

I was thinking about using 2 x 2" timber for the framing. The existing ceiling is over 11 feet high so lowering it by around 2½ - 3 inches isn't going to make it look odd. It just occurred to me that this method will have another advantage - the framing will be positioned hard against the...

    Plasterboard Ceiling

Hi ColJack, The existing ceiling (lath and plaster) is a mess. The plaster is coming away from the lath and will probably fall in if I disturb it. The owner wants the job done quickly, cheaply and with the least disruption. George

    Plasterboard Ceiling

I will be installing a new plasterboard (12.5mm) ceiling in a bathroom and intend fixing it to a timber stud frame. I anticipate fixing it at 400mm centres. My question is; what would be the best size of timber for the job? Thanks.

    Exchange Feeder Tank

Thanks for the excellent responses folk.

    Exchange Feeder Tank

Thanks for that. My understanding is that the 1/2" pipe is measured on the inside diameter whilst the 15mm is measured on the outside diameter so depending on the wall thickness I can see how there wouldn't be much difference. Thanks again.

    Exchange Feeder Tank

I've been asked to take out an old metal feeder tank, replace it with a plastic one and fit an isolater valve. The pipework on the old tank are probably imperial sizes - they look slightly bigger than the modern 15mm. Are there any compression fittings available which I can use to connect the...

    Pop-up Waste

Thanks for the reponses guys. When I dismantled the pop-up assembly to have a look, I didn't see any seal, just a washer behind the knurled nut. However, as there is a fair bit of gunge in the waste, I wonder if the seal is sticking to the waste pipe. I must have a poke around with something...

    Pop-up Waste

When the pop-up waste on an aquaintance's wash basin is opened, water runs out of the waste at the point where the rod passes through. How can I fix it? Thanks.
