I will be installing a new plasterboard (12.5mm) ceiling in a bathroom and intend fixing it to a timber stud frame. I anticipate fixing it at 400mm centres. My question is; what would be the best size of timber for the job?

Thanks.

Hi ColJack,
The existing ceiling (lath and plaster) is a mess. The plaster is coming away from the lath and will probably fall in if I disturb it.
The owner wants the job done quickly, cheaply and with the least disruption.

I was thinking about using 2 x 2" timber for the framing. The existing ceiling is over 11 feet high so lowering it by around 2½ - 3 inches isn't going to make it look odd.
It just occurred to me that this method will have another advantage - the framing will be positioned hard against the existing ceiling so should actually support it and prevent it collapsing any further - I think
