99% indoor humidity... what to do?

Thanks! Point taken on the laundry hanging, though we haven't figured out what we can do about it yet... Good insulation is a huge benefit. Unfortunately not sure what we can do with our solid external wall.. Have been reading about EWI and the risk of damp has put me off, for now. So far...

99% indoor humidity... what to do?

Yes there was a small leak in the pipe above the kitchen ceiling (which is worth another post....). That has been fixed and we are waiting for it to dry out before repairing the ceiling. So that could be contributing to the humidity issue too, but even with that on some days we only have around...

99% indoor humidity... what to do?

Thanks a lot Woody. I've read some of your other posts on this topic too and they've been very helpful, esp on humidity vs condensation and mould :) Will see if turning up the heating can reduce some of the humidity meanwhile. Some articles say that it reduces energy cost to turn on the...

99% indoor humidity... what to do?

Thanks. Will try turning up the heating a bit and see what happens... Usually we don't heat the rooms to above 16C... if it's sunny outside the rooms in the south do get to above 20C though

99% indoor humidity... what to do?

Thanks a lot for the advice! Maybe we'll keep the radiator in the hallway on all the time then. It's such a shame as the hallway is actually on the south side so should be getting quite good warmth during the day, but it's blocked by the porch outside, and it's on the external wall, so humidity...

99% indoor humidity... what to do?

Overnight outside temperature was around 4C I remember, and indoor if the radiator is not on (well there's no radiator in the kitchen anyway) it's usually 6-7C on the north side of the house.

99% indoor humidity... what to do?

Thanks JohnD. This morning it happened without me doing much cooking at all (fried an egg, that was it, which I did on most other days too which didn't cause such a dramatic increase in humidity). Bathroom extractor fans were installed when we moved in and seem to be working fine. We are drying...

99% indoor humidity... what to do?

We've not lived in a house before (previously renting in flats) so still trying to get a handle on how to manage the humidity indoor. It's a 1930s end-of-terrace, with solid walls. I've read about the ideas of increasing ventilation and reducing moisture, so have got some measures planned out...

Flaky paint on bathroom wall - leak or damp?

Update to this if anyone is interested: Our builder came back and inspected the outside of the house, didn't see any obvious cracks in the area. Also pipes are said to be capped to the floor so shouldn't be the pipes too. Most likely it was the plaster that wasn't fully dried when they painted...

Flaky paint on bathroom wall - leak or damp?

Hi all, we've just had our first floor bathroom renovated a bit in Dec, took out an old shower unit that we don't need, and replastered the wall area and painted it. After last weekend's heavy snow, we noticed that the paint has become flaky in the lower part of the wall (which is a north-facing...

    Tidying up boiler cupboard

Thanks! We are also considering putting a small shelf case there to hide all the pipes, but would be nice to paint the walls first.

    Tidying up boiler cupboard

Hi all, I've got an old boiler cupboard in a bedroom which needs quite a bit of tidying up (see photos). I removed some of the old flaky wallpaper on the wall inside, but other areas behind the pipework etc are hard to get to, and the wallpaper is still well-attached. Wondering if there is an...

    Crack in garden wall

Thanks both. Will leave it for now then. I'm sure the ivy will find it way up pretty quickly! :P

    Crack in garden wall

Hi all, I trimmed back some ivy growing all over my garden wall, and discovered that there is a small crack running vertical in the wall (see photos). Wondering what I should use to repair it please? Thanks!

Gap/hole between window fascia and wall

We've got some Polyfilla (https://www.screwfix.com/p/polycell-trade-polyfilla-easy-sand-interior-filler-white-2kg/7968f). Wonder if it can work as well?

Gap/hole between window fascia and wall

Hello, I'm in the middle of painting a small first floor bedroom, and noticed that there are some gaps above the bay window fascia. There is some flaky old foam in place but it falls apart quite easily. Can also feel some draught in the gap/hole on the top left corner (about one finger's width)...

Is it worth putting up scaffolding for a few minor repairs?

Your observation is quite right, though I don't think there's a front extension so the main roofline could just be the design of the houses around this area. So far half of the people who came to have a look thought it needs scaffolding and the other half thought ladders are enough.

Is it worth putting up scaffolding for a few minor repairs?

Found this (https://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg411.pdf): Domestic clients: If you are having work done on your own home, or the home of a family member, and it is not in connection with a business, you will be a domestic client. The only responsibility a domestic client has under CDM 2015 is to...
