Considering a loft conversion in a shallow pitched roof, raising joists would impact useable space

I believe the generally accepted minimum is 2.3m - so a bit to gain and sounds like it would help with your stairs - personally, in the grand scheme of a loft conversion I don't see the ceilings and coving a big deal. For a 3.8m span you would need something like 6x3 or 7x2. If your house has...

Yes, we all have Humax but Freesat - any particular model?

    Good Freeview recorder

For my 70yr old brother in law. Previously had VM package at late father's house but now in his own place and won't pay, at the moment also not keen on paying for any broadband but may be persuaded in future - so something easy to use to watch and record Freeview fed from aerial, with...

Have you considered lower the floor into the rooms below?

Worth Taking up Chipboard Panels To Make Improvements While the Carpets are off?

That's horrendous. Maybe some timber joists would be better - notched/spaced around the pipes, 400mm centres. I'd still reuse the chipboard - as for those banging holes through 22mm flooring grade chipboard with their bed legs (I can understand council house Weetabix chipboard) - you must be...

Purlins not supported at party wall

Completely, but the "repair" done now will have time to age and look like it's been there forever so the issue doesn't even exist when the house is sold in the future.

Purlins not supported at party wall

A short length of angle iron bolted to the wall underneath will adequately support it.

Worth Taking up Chipboard Panels To Make Improvements While the Carpets are off?

Personally I've always found properly fixed 22mm t&g flooring grade chipboard to be perfectly adequate and a lot easier to use than 8x2 ply. I doubt you'll get the old stuff up intact (unless it's as inadequately fixed as you say). If the walls are stud work you'll need to watch any that are...

Where did Job and Knock go?

I could be wrong, but I have a feeling he resurrected himself fairly recently as @GhostIntMachine - certainly had a similar knowledge of joinery and tools....

Notching Joists Will Thye Need Sistering?

As it's a bathroom, probably easier to keep a picture for reference and access via ceiling below if necessary rather than pulling up the floor. I use plastic myself but don't conceal joints in floors just in case! They just live in my cupboard of plumbing shame

    Gas or induction hob

We've had one for a few months after a lifetime of gas and are quite impressed. I believe running costs are quite competitive. The only issues I've found are: when frying eggs - you need to be aware that if you tilt the pan too much it cuts off the power - but I seem to have adjusted to this -...

    Alloys Scuff Repair

Same, wife's 15 year old car without a mark, I did the school run u-turn that I do every day in my own car which obviously has a smaller turning circle. Still rehearsing my "what the bloody hell have you done to your car" speech for her.

I saw this the other day, I expected someone in authority in our country to step in Ha Ha. It seems there's a voluntary goodwill scheme:

    mains water pump?

Don't those pumps "suck" (I know they actually don't) - and wouldn't it "suck" water from the other house rather than the main a quarter of a mile away?

    Filler, stains, varnish.

Treads and risers are being clad so it's just the strings and remains of the newels I need to deal with. The flaps were to access the risers to put wiring in for LEDs before I underboarded the stairs.

    Filler, stains, varnish.

I'm looking for the best way to match what's left of the existing wood to my new oak cappings. The strings will need a bit of "wood coloured" filler in places, the cappings currently just have one coat of clear varnish.
