    Crack in freshly-plastered ceiling

I had the ceiling plastered in my spare room in April last year as part of a DIY renovation - https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=&t=1757711 Just noticed a large crack in the ceiling. Difficult to get a good photo of unfortunately - it's very obvious from certain angles and...

Penetrating Oil DW40 ..... any good?

For penetrating fluid, you want Plusgas. If you want a general lubricant that might help, then I've found EuroCarPart's Maintenance Fluid is alright. And very cheap...

Could I learn to use an electric tester?

What is an "electric tester"? Do you mean one of those non-contact current voltage detectors? A multimeter? a proving unit? Some other kind of tester (e.g. RCD)?

Turning ones back on suspect electrics?

If it sold for less-than-market-value, it suggests that the buyers factored in the cost of some remedial works. If you live very near - why not introduce yourself to the new owners when they move in? You can mention how you knew the previous owner, but that he was getting on a bit and that...

PIR and downlights that fade in/out

I have a Varilight Vpro dimmer installed in a loft to dim some downlights, but it's actually controlled from a regular wall switch. It also does the "soft start" slow dimming over about 1.5 seconds. Might be able to put the same between the PIR and the light(s)? Doesn't do the opposite when...

    bathroom downlights wrong size

Bodge solution - put some masking tape on from below over the hole, pour filler (e.g. pollyfilla) in from above. Couple of layers allowing time to set in between. Remove tape, sand and repaint just the area and you'll never know. Done this a couple of times on lath & plaster ceilings.

Adding isolation valve to tap connector

I need 400+mm tails really. I can't find any in that size. But i'm happy to replace the the tails as it means one less joint.

Adding isolation valve to tap connector

I've just bought a new kitchen mixer tap, but I noticed that there's no isolation valve on either hot or cold so I have to turn all the water off to do anything. The water pipes are copper with a compression-to-screw fitting on the end where the tap tails attch with this connector I've seen...

How to remove slate roof tiles from inside (Velux fitting)

If it helps, it's a 30's ex-LA property. I'm happy to break a couple (I won't need them once the window goes in), it's more just if I will really struggle to get them out hole and reinstall them after i've done the window, then it might be a job for a roofer.

How to remove slate roof tiles from inside (Velux fitting)

Interested in fitting a Velux window to my house. Happy with all the internal and carpentry aspects, but what I'm stuck on is the roofing part. How do you remove these slates from inside (once the felt is removed, obviously...) (I'm assuming they are actually slates!)

    Absolutely not.

New MK Socket Outlet wont fit old back box

I have the same problem with MK single sockets and some old "Ashley" surface back boxes. The plastic around the lugs is too large and interferes with the plastic on the back of the socket itself, which prevents it from being installed.

Is this allowed.. Surface mounted box.

Why wouldn't it be allowed? How would the cable be pulled out, if it's inside some plastic trunking? I'm assuming we aren't talking about exposed flex here.

    Plasterboarding ceiling on own

Get a plasterboard lifter, pick up one secondhand if you have to and sell afterwards. Will make so much easier!

    Sourcing your own carpets?

I bought a new carpet for the first time last year and found about half the companies i contacted would fit carpets they didn't supply, and for reasonable prices. They couldn't fit me in soon enough so I ended up with someone I found on Facebook who did a regular sized room for £40. I fitted...

    Moving a 1G light switch

Will the connections be accessible afterwards? If not, you can't use terminal blocks as they aren't maintenance free.

Outside LED security light dull of water - but still working!

I think this is your biggest problem - what if you *need* to turn it off (as you do now).

Replace Aurora Down lights in Lounge

I've got 5x Enlite downlights (from Aurora) and using an Varlight vPro dimmer they go down to virtually nothing. You can get one for £15 - you want a trailing edge one. I'd swap the dimmer first.

solar shed lights - charger question

I've got something similar wired up on a bigger scale (2x 40w panels, 3 car batteries). I just use a car battery trickle charger for charging it, direct to the battery. I don't need to disconnect anything, I fitted a 12v car cigarette lighter into the workbench for and put the same plug in my...
