    The insulation is removed to allow adequate airflow around the light fittings to prevent them over heating, but as you say you are losing heat around them and more importantly allowing moist air from your bathroom to enter the loft space. Even LED lamps run hot so will require a good sized space...

    Any make will be OK to replace it with. The biggest problem will be getting one where the water and wiring entries match up with your old unit. Tiles should go behind the shower not be cut around it.

    I don't think there is anything in the building regs but there is something in BS 7671 which says about gangways around electrical control gear. I don't have my copy with me at the moment so can't give you references but if you post on the electrical forum I am sure someone on there will tell...

    Replacing a shower

    If the cable is only 10mm across then it sounds like 2.5mm2 cable which is no where near big enough for your new shower. You need an electrician to upgrade your feed to the shower and provide you with RCD protection.

    When you say the cable is 10mm is that the measurement across the cable or is that what is written on the grey outer sheath?
