Tool to find live wires / pipes before drilling

I am looking to move a light fitting so it's over my table (currently all lights are screwed into joists which are in odd places). I'd like to do this by installing a hook with a plasterboard fixing and 'swagging' the pendant. However these tend to be quite long and I am concerned about...

No lights after installing new roses

No it's definitely not fish - it's very feint but everyone can smell it when entering the room. The smell is similar to hot plastic smell, or when you burn dust off a new appliance like boiling a new kettle. It's too dark now but I'll recheck all connections first thing tomorrow, I did check...

No lights after installing new roses

Contacted the manufacturer and they said T2 holders. Could it be the wiring of the switch? The old one had 2 inputs (L3 and L2) they had 2 wires in L3 and 1 wire in L2. My new switch has L1,L2 & L3. I have 1 in L1 and 2 in L2.

I've turned them off and will call a sparky tomorrow, can't take risks of burning the house down :(

I wasn't sure what that meant at the time, seems very obvious to me now :)

The rose and pendant drop are rated for 100w - the bulbs I used are 40w. Not sure if it's T1 or T2.

No lights after installing new roses

OK, so now the room with the 2 new lights has a feint burning smell - and the new light fitting is very hot - I've turned it off while I investigate. Could this be the wiring, the bulb or the fitting? I do have just 2 candle bulbs in there for now as this is what was in the chandeliers (10 of...

Haha no problem, just wondered why it was different to the others - believe me I am not touching it again!

No lights after installing new roses

It worked! :D:D:D:D I trust this is the correct way to do it and will be safe? Is this looping at the switch?

No lights after installing new roses

Update: OK I really think I am getting somewhere! I disconnected both wires in rose #1 and tested again. I have 240v from one cable when the switch is on, and 0v when the switch is off. The second cable gives me 0v regardless. So I wired up the 240v wires to the rose and it works, full...

Hi - it's on the after picture, but not very clear. It's the far left one next to the blue

No lights after installing new roses

I really don't recall it coming off, if anything I was very cautious of keeping it on, but with 2 screaming kids and everything else going on it's possibility I guess...

No lights after installing new roses

I've seen some advice that says if lights #1 & #2 are on the same circuit with a single switch then it should be both reds together and both blacks together. I think that makes sense to me, but I've also seen advice saying never to put 2 blacks together!

No lights after installing new roses

Hi Securespark- sorry about the confusion. I posted an update this morning; basically I swapped rose #3 for a better quality one (easier for me to swap wires around) and I also worked out how the original rose was wired up and copied that exactly. Since then all the lights work correctly, the...

No lights after installing new roses

Definetly electricity into the living room roses - they are on just not the usual brightness - as if they are not getting enough power? Re the black blob, yes sorry I should have labeled that. This is exactly as you said; a light at the bottom of the stairs that comes on/off with light #3 on my...

No lights after installing new roses

In the light switch I have 3 red cables, 2 into L3 and 1 into L2 (those are the only inputs). I replaced this with a switch that had L1,L2,L3 and it works when I place the pair in L1 and the single into L2. RE the MM - yes it's fine as are the lights. I put MM on V 200 and had a reading that...

No lights after installing new roses

Here is where I am setup as of today. The only reason I labeled them switches is because of the switch test with my mm. They both go off when one of the 2 switches is on. The dimmer wires are also connected to the porch light because swapping these over can turn the porch lights on/off from...

No lights after installing new roses

Thanks for persisting with me securespark! I did identify the switch cables when I first swapped the rose, the MM beeped and it didn't on the other 2 cables - but now I get no beep (though those 2 cables do jump up in number)

No lights after installing new roses

So if I understand you correctly I should move both black wires to share 1 hole and both red wires to one hole? I am 99.9% sure I have rose #3 correct as going through it wire by wire there is only 2 ways I can configure it and I have tried both, whereas rose #1 I didn't look how they had it...
