Impartial advisor on works carried out?

It's an old house, +100 years, so the floor is off plumb where the stairs start rising. Not sure how the joists have been attached. The company owner, a chippy by trade, was talking about how over time and the joists and T&G dries out you can get movement that causes the floor to creak...

Impartial advisor on works carried out?

Just wanted to run some questions by the forum as a sanity check. The following items are being defended by our building firm. Is fitting Velux windows on top of batterns (and not the roof joists) the correct way to fit them? Is there any justification in fitting stairs out of plumb front...

Impartial advisor on works carried out?

Hi Long story short - we’ve had some building works carried out (large project) and have a final list of issues/ snags. Some major and some fairly minor. We’re anticipating the builder who carried out these works will dispute some of them, in other words not want to put them right. He’s...

    Double radiator single valve location

Hi Need to upgrade our bedroom radiator from a single to a double but don't want the extra expense (budgets run over following decoration) of getting the copper pipes moved to fit the new double rad's valve location (center of the rad). Do you know of any stockists that do double rads with...

Loft Fire Regs - wire mesh under Rockwool required?

Hi Quick question. Does UK or England's household fire regulations require wire mesh (chicken wire) to cradle Rockwool that's fitted over a ceiling, when a new loft conversion is built? We're in the process of agreeing final payment for a loft conversion we've recently had completed. The...

    Dispute with Electrical installers

It's not whinging. I'm explaining the issues as I see them. Bottom line is we're paying way more than we should be for this job BUT - as we've now established in the two threads there's nothing we can do about it without a lot of grief - we have agreed to pay them. Can close this thread now.

    Dispute with Electrical installers

Was using MK back boxes. Chased out with a hammer and bolster, held them is situ to mark one of the screw holes. They're fixed into yellow stocks so not the best brick to fix into but used 70mm screws. Masonry bit drilled a little more than the raw plugs needed. Fixed them with 70mm screws cross...

    Dispute with Electrical installers

OK fine. As it turns out I am the one fixing them. Btw I was a builder for 10 years + when I came out of school so know a lot more than the average customer.

    Dispute with Electrical installers

They inspected them when they arrived to do the job and agreed they were fixed correctly. They loosened them (as I'm just a customer they must have done this with their magic electric fairy will wave her magic wand) so it's their responsibility.

    Dispute with Electrical installers

Good effort mikhail! :D He visited our house to quote. He confirmed they charge by the hour and their hourly rate. He didn't mention the hourly rate does not include £120 a day for a trainee engineer to be onsite or £60 for materials. This is all true except when I paid the deposit I...

    Dispute with Electrical installers

They've asked to see proof that installing the maintenance free JB or crimped wires with a JB is a UK regulation. Where can I find a link that confirms this? Thanks

    Dispute with Electrical installers

I thought your agenda (apart from being a troll) was to laugh at my posts and situation, as you said in the other thread. The other thread btw is to do with getting financial compensation where as this one is more about if the work is compliant with UK standards. We've already established it...

    Dispute with Electrical installers

Interesting and very helpful info there riveralt. Thanks. I assume the contract between us commenced when I agreed to pay the deposit, £255 (50% of the total quoted cost) over the phone. This was 10 days before we received the actual quote in an email. They've confirmed this date.

    Dispute with Electrical installers

Hi Chri5 I hired them on the basis of the conversation with the guy quoting and that the job was only 300 quid or so based on their hourly rate. We used our loft conversion company to fit the electrics in the room next door and their price was similar to the price you mentioned. Their...
