    Smart Meters

If it's an open cycle gas turbine then no steam is involved. Basically it's a big jet engine powered by gas. In fact some, Taylors Lane in London for example, used the same turbines as in Concorde to drive the generators. In a CCGT power station a 'HRSG' (Heat Recovery Steam Generator) is used...

    Smart Meters

I'm with Dork Lard and EFLImpudence on this one. I like to know that no one has ability to turn off or alter my supply without my knowledge plus the way hackers are going these days smart meters will soon be targeted. After all if they can be bothered to hack light bulbs (Phillips smart bulbs -...

    Thread for arguing about "Transformers"

It's not just SMPS that can do (most) of the above. The transformers I work with can certainly create interference to other equipment. You are not allowed near one if you have a pacemaker and they can also play hell with computer equipment. They may not produce ultra sonic noise but the hum that...

    Perks of the job?

I work with a bunch of them. I wouldn't want one for Xmas

    Thread for arguing about "Transformers"

This thread has helped explain a lot to me. It seems for years I've been confusing 'Transformers' with 'Transvestites'. I've always wondered why they scream when I connect them to a 230v supply

    Perks of the job?

I get sent on 'training courses', usually once a year. Last year was 4 days in Singapore, the year before was Prague and before that was 7 days in Montreal. I'm not complaining :D

    Solar Panels

Modern cooling towers are actually quite small and not towers any more. Basically they are large radiators with bloody huge fans. Personally would rather see them (and a CCGT or Nuke) power station rather than miles and miles of windmills.

    Solar Panels

That's too sexist now. You've got to use the phrase 'It's gone chest skywards'

    Sharing birthdays

Probably not. I bet he doesn't drive a Transit Custom either. Hmmmm.....I'm starting to feel sorry for him ;-)

    Sharing birthdays

I share my birthday with John Francis Bongiovi, Jr. Born the same day, same year. He's slightly better known than me - Jon Bon Jovi. I sometimes look at the life he's had and compare it with mine. Would I swap? Too bloody right I would!

    Polystyrene backed lining paper

The stuff I'm using is sold in B&Q, Red Label insulating lining paper. 4mm polystyrene with a 'reinforced lining paper' on one side. It's a real pain in the a*se to put up but the finish is a lot better than the wall. It did crease in a couple of places but nothing a little filler won't put right.

    Polystyrene backed lining paper

I'm in the process of re-decorating. Wife wants polystyrene lining paper stuck on the walls before the new paper (who am I to argue!). It's an exterior wall, '70s build, and always feels cold to the touch. The lining paper is the type that B&Q sell and has polystyrene one side with a paper...

    VAG-COM or VCDS

Try VCDS-LITE. It's shareware and you can try a lot of the options before you have to decide if you want to register or not. I found it very useful when I had my A4 Avant 2.5tds. You can get a copy from http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds-lite/index.html

    Transit van thieves

They only show the Mk1 diesel. The petrol version had a different front end. Hmmm....they days when you could buy a petrol van..... I prefered the Bedford CF.

    Transit van thieves

My works van ('65 Transit Custom) has had the side and rear door handles disconnected and security locks added. To get into the back you unlock with the remote then open the door using the key. It's great until you accidentely lock your keys in the back.

    Kudox radiators, never again

    There's someone who has died?

    Kudox radiators, never again

The screwdriver I used was one of those 50p (maybe 75p) ones from B&Q. You've probably seen the ones. There are two types, Red handle with flat blade, blue handle for cross head. No need for anything better. Get the flat blade one. Just stick it in the slot and hit it with a hammer then twist.

    Kudox radiators, never again

I've fitted two in the last week. As someone else has said, just stick a big screwdriver in the end, welt it a couple of times with a hammer (the screwdriver, not the rad :ROFLMAO: ) then twist. No problem :D
