Unfortunately two are telling me it won’t scan due to the metallic. Here’s a picture of it. It’s only when you look really really closely you can see it is a metallic, it generally just looks like a mid/gunmetal grey.

Hi Ian I’ve spoken to Ariston a few times now and seen the element incorporates the anode. There aren’t separate anodes on this cylinder. Here’s pics. Other cruddy element is top one. You can see the anode furred up (I know doing its job..) How do those anodes seem size wise? Just a thought of...

What sort of failures are you referring to, bursts of some sort? That doesn't sound pleasant. I'd have thought/hoped a failure might mean blow off blowing off! ..So probably the passer by outside getting scalded not the person in the flat underneath! Interested to know what sort of failure...

Gotcha. I have endeavoured to get the cylinders we have checked annually too. Btw I do know what sacrificial anodes are for. As I mentioned above I do understand the system pretty well. I know the importance of safety regarding them too.
