Mains water pipe size and taps fed from tank or mains

I'd go for the same as Tickly, but if you're putting a bath in and can't feed it with 22mm from the tank, it might be worth using mains cold for a faster fill.

so whats the average charge to install a boiler

Surely asking for an average price allows for the fact that some installs are more complicated than others? And surely an Engineer with a bit of experience could say "the most I've ever had to charge is £x, usually closer to £y"

    cylinder insulation effectiveness diminishing

I have a Gledhill with the mineral wool insulation / plastic cover. It was so effective that my Wife used to complain that nothing would dry in the airing cupboard! Unfortunately one of my connections sprang a leak and I had to cut it all off to find it - it's now got a normal jacket on...

    self employed AND PAYE?

I think you can barter for services, as there was a few local initiatives doing the rounds a while back - I think the key is that you are not allowed to exchange your 'normal' service. So if you're an accountant you can wash cars in exchange for something, but any accountancy work has to be...

    Toilet overflows when on holiday

I've been looking at an overflowing toilet and can't for the life of me work out what the fault could be. Tank fed toilet, with a new fluidmaster inlet valve fitted about two months back. Works absolutely fine for 99% of the time. However on two occasions the owner has gone on holiday...

Drayton Digistat RF3 Wireless System has a mind of it's own!

The first thing I'd do is change the batteries, you'll need 4 AA's Then it's worth checking the receiver, which could be in the airing cupboard, to see if it's getting a signal. You'll need to check the instructions to see which light should flash and when. If it is a problem with the...

    Cylinder Jacket

It's a 48x18 Gledhill cylinder. I was gutted that I had to cut off the factory fitted insulation to find and fix a leak, and was hoping that I could do something a little neater than installing a second jacket under the first. Still if that's the only solution, it'll have to do. Many thanks.

    Cylinder Jacket

It's a really silly question but can I get a cylinder jacket in a size other than 36x18 or 42x18? I think I could do with something around 48 or 50x18, but I can't find it on Google. Thanks

Isolating cold water to upstairs toilet

Turning off the incoming supply, either outside in the pavement or via your stop cock will allow you to replace it. If it's mains fed that's all you need to do. If it's tank fed you'll need to drain the tank by running the bath taps. However if you do have to drain the tank beware of...

    Painting Mahogany Bannister & Spindles

I have a mahogany bannister and spindles that I want to paint white. It's in a family home so is subject to a fair amount of wear and tear. Whats the best prep, undercoat and gloss to use to get long lasting results. Many thanks,

boiler knock 5 mins after heating starts up

Bob, I have exactly the same problem with my boiler. Mine makes a noise like it is 'kettling' - the water is being overheated in the boiler and boiling. This can be due to a pump failure, and would result in the boiler tripping out on overheat. Because the problem only happens briefly...

    Eastbrook Company - Any good?

I've had a few bits from the Eastbrook catalogue via my local Merchants without any problems. Some of it seems quite reasonable and some a bit expensive.

    Closeboard Fencing - Overlap

Is there any value in reducing the spacing of the feather edge from 75mm to 65mm or less? I have a fence to install and just thought that a greater overlap would be stronger and more resistant to next doors hedge growing through. Thanks,

    Brick-layer from hell.

Kirkgas, I'm pretty much with you on this one. Whilst I can only dream of a day rate of £250 (although I do sometime pick that up on quoted work), I understand the need to charge enough to cover all the circumstances of being self-employed. You've got 365 days in a year, but let's assume a...

How do I solve this roofing pitch problem ?

I built my extension with a 16 degree pitch and Marley Moderns, with no major problems in 4 years. Use a quality roofing membrane, be generous with the the overlaps, and you'll probably be OK.

    Chaotic tradesmen

I'm a bit of both types. I'll always wear my branded clothing for Customers and quotes are typed up on headed paper. But the back of my van is a tip, and I rarely keep an area tidy whilst working. My motivation? Well all I know is that my satisfaction is derived from getting on with the...

    SDS Drill

Screwfix accidentally sent me a 'Sparky' SDS drill at least 5 years ago. It has a clutch (which can be a little weak for core drilling) and rotary stop. It's still going strong today and has a fair amount of abuse over the years. I'd happily have another one, although before this I had...

    Don't Pay...

I had a non payer last November, after I completed some work in a rental property. I took it through the Small Claims process and a CCJ was issued, but there was no point instructing the Baliffs as I only had the rental address and the Tenants goods can't be seized, so I wrote the money off...

    Distance between houses

I understand your problem, but don't know if it will affect your application. Our neighbours house has similar external chimney breasts and by the time we put up our extension there was a gap of about 4-5ft.

Cutting a door to fit - what is the most you can take off?

But you'll still need to take 18mm off each edge! That's going to leave the door a bit weak, but it depends on the type of door and the size of the rails. I have taken more than that off of standard panel doors, but salvaged the rail and refixed it into the door to try and maintain it's...
