Replacing an RCD in a MK Consumer Unit

Yes it is easy, BUT unless you are prepared to cut the power to the CU it is also potentially very dangerous because the current limit from a shock could be as high as 100A. CUs do vary so I suggest you post a photo first. As I'm sure you've guessed - if the replacement trips too then you...

New edition of the Regs question

I got a couple of questions on this: 1) What's the schedule for the release of the 17th Ed? I know it has finished its public consultation, but is the next step formal release or does it go through some other stage first? 2) If all lighting in a bathroom is SELV and there is no shaver...

    Part 'P' Testing

I'm in a similar position except that its me doing my wiring (I'm a competent person who is not registered with the self-certification scheme). I have agreed this with my LABC and they are fine about it. However in studying the wording of the part P approved document, to me it is not entirely...

Is all RCBOs a good idea?

Sorry, what I meant was is there a type of RCBO which does not have the trailing wires because it will fit a specially-designed CU which has three bus-bars instead of just one?

Is all RCBOs a good idea?

Thanks. I noticed that commonly available MCBOs are designed to fit standard CUs so they have 'trailing' neutal and earth wires. Does anyone know of a manufacturer who makes CUs which are specifically designed for MCBOs so that these 'trailing' wires are not needed?

Is all RCBOs a good idea?

I've read a few posts on the possible changes in BS7671:2008 and people's reactions to it. If I understand it correctly, the new standard recommends increased use of RCD protection? In my case the house I bought last year has no RCD protection, so I had planned to change the CU to a split...

    help with bathroom lighting

Any JB needs to be accessible for inspection. I assume that "above the ceiling" is in the loft? If so this will be OK. Have you taken note of the zoning in the bathroom? All equipment needs to be appropriate to the zone it is located in. And I assume you are aware that any work inside a...

Have I understood bathroom zones correctly?

As you have seen, the SI defines the special location according to the zones, and part P simplifies it as a room containing a bath or shower. So if you are working outside the zones you are OK. SI is the law and Part P is guidance.

    what cable should i use

The part P wording is: "New central heating control wiring installations are notifiable even where work in kitchens and bathrooms is avoided"

    bonding a towel rail

Yes, all metal parts need to be bonded together, and ALSO to the cpc of any part of the installation within the bathroom. If this is an electric towel rail, then the metalwork must already be connected to the cpc internally, so supplementary bonding should not be required.

    pendant set from socket

Key to your question is whether or not the existing socket in the shed is safe. Can you confirm this - does it have RCD protection? Officially, even if a standard plug is used, what you are proposing is fixed equipment and there fore covered by Part P. As it is in a shed it is notifiable work.

    Inspection and Test

As far as I am aware, there is no legal requirement for periodic inspection and testing - it is simply recommended by BS7671. If you want a PIR then that has nothing to do with building control, that is simply an arrangement between you and whoever will provide one. I believe (someome please...

    My new-build home - something's not right

Quite right - not a PIR - an EIC.

Have an issue - Electrician has disappeared

Huntersec, I don't know about your authority and I know that they can be different, however as I am going through this process myself as an unregistered competent person, I have been looking at the rules and meking my own agreements with my local BC. Looking at the 2006 amended part P doc, it...

    My new-build home - something's not right

My brother-in-law recently bought a new-build (Bloor) and I asked to see the PIR. He didn't have one. Luckily he asked the salesperson who managed to find it. His solicitor didn't mention it so without my intervention he'd never had known he had a right to it.

    underfloor heating and part p

Sounds like you know what you are doing and have done a safe job. So the only issue you face is IF you need to provide certification details in the future. The only reason for this is maybe for insurance purposes or if you come to sell the property and the buyer wants to see such certification...

    Limitations of radial circuit

    Garage Electrics

If you are having an new CU fitted, surely it will have MCBs and not fuses? In theory you can do what you are suggesting as long as the old board is in good condition. However remember that the whole point of circuit current protection (i.e. a fuse or MCB) is to protect the cable from...

too many spotlights ?? + humming dimmer switches ??

50W halogens are pretty bright and will get very hot. I have some 20W ones at home and they seem plenty bright to me. Furthermore the latest designs reflect the IR forward instead of backwards so that they are even brighter (at least that what the manufacturers say). I suggest you try some for...
