incoperating RCD to existing lighting circuit

Not sure how the regulations see it, but i wouldnt do it this way. If an old couple, or disabled person are living there, then the loft is not accessible for them, so if the RCD trips they wont be able to reset it.. Also if there's no loft lighting, then likewise it would be dangerous...

Coverting a barn into a nursery

Get a quote for covering over the asbestos, it might prove cheaper, and help keep the building insulated. Aka kingspan metallic roof over the top, and Plasterboard inside. Have to check with a roofing company how their regulations work, but its another idea. How tall are the kids gonna be...

nut (not edible) in a pipe

Is the tube carrying on after the nut, or ends not far after? Could you solder the nut in, or, solder a reduce either side of a bit of pipe containing the nut? Alternatively, would a stud adapter be usuable instead, you can get them in most sizes, m6 m8 m10 etc, but it gives you an inch to...

    Lighting question

lol good call. Ok erm... Buy a multimeter and dead test the cables to find out what goes where. You will then be able to match them up to the correct switches by the same method, also finding which is the switched live. You can then use the Wiki you will see how to wire it up properly...

    3 and earth

They come in different sizes because they have got different uses, eg ring finals (higher current) and lighting circuit (lower max current) 6A junction boxes, 6A fuse / circuit breaker and 1.5mm flat Twin and earth

    Kitchen wiring + downlighters

How about putting a fused spur (not sure if thats the correct name, but a neon lit switch with a fuse) above the desktop, then wired down to the socket outlet. This then makes it clear there is a cable run above it, and you can easily turn the dishwasher off when your not using it.

    Kitchen wiring + downlighters

Horizontal/vertical from sockets are safe zones. The bathroom socket is a bit worrying though. Whats it for? Is there a shower in there, or just a WC? Or do you mean its a shaver socket?

    help with defrosting a freezer

I use a tub of hot water at the bottom of my freezer. heat helps the ice melt, and gives the ice somewhere to be scrapped into. just pour down the sink when cold. I double wrap my frozen stuff in carrier bags, then stick it wherevers the coolest, downstairs bathroom or the shed. And...

    Kitchen wiring + downlighters

bathroom socket?!? Are the choc blocks in an accesible choc box? Cable runs through the bathroom are dodgy, unless iirc they are 50mm deep in the wall. Still best to avoid though. Someone will no doubt clarify. Have you not got a ring final running above the kitchen ceiling?

    3 and earth

If your positive that its the same wire then theoretically yes you could put it into a new 6 amp circuit breaker, then fill out the necessary testing and inspection forms for a new circuit.

    3 and earth

Yep. Providing its within the readings allowed by BS7671 Lighting is run in 1.5mm2 twin and earth

    3 and earth

If you've got a multimeter you could use that to test it. Realistically, when installing any new circuit you should be doing an Earth fault loop impedence test (EFLI) to ensure that you have got a good earth connection

check out the "choice of CU (brand)" topic

    3 and earth

Yeah a switch can be put in. Reading back though it looks like your trying to install old colours cable too, your best bet is to use new harmonised twin and earth. If your gonna do a job, do it right first time. Saves future repair bills.

Are you looking to switch it too? Do you know if your junction box is only on when the light switch is flicked, or always on?

    Cable Gona BE Prob??

Thats why a metal consumer unit would be good, so you can attach your gland tightly too it. Only problem might be getting the cable into the terminals!
