Finding a competent and reliable tradesman... a rant...

I know that many of you on here a professionals. I only wish to highlight to you the problems faced by punters such as myself when looking for a heating engineer. In the old days, it was off to the Yellow Pages and a quick look up the "plumbing" section. Then heating got complicated and the...

What? Me? What have I done? Anyhow - couldn't find out how to send you an email through the profile so just posted a comment instead! Cheers Carl

Arguing with Vaillant about boiler problem!

So (forgive my total numptitude on this - I know nothing...) how can it be the heat exchanger if the heat exchanger is what warms the water up and the radiators get hot enough to burn you? Is the water flow rate considerably less with the heating? Does the heat exchanger warm it only slightly...

Arguing with Vaillant about boiler problem!

Hi guys. Thanks for the responses. Didn't mean to tweak any tails here, I asked the question about cost as I have no idea of the cost of parts and the length of time to fit them. I know about computers and techie things, not boilers... I take on board the point about travelling out and charging...

Arguing with Vaillant about boiler problem!

Fair point, although I didn't expect them personally to fix it, rather recommend an engineer in the area that knows a combi boiler from a combine harvester... I just rang their premium rate help line and they told me in about 30 seconds flat that it's almost certainly a diverter valve issue...

Arguing with Vaillant about boiler problem!

Hi all. Recently posted in here about a problem 10-year-old Turbomax 242E. It heats the radiators just fine (even with the radiator dial set to "3", we have to turn the individual radiator thermostats right down or you end up practically burning yourself on them if you touch one! However, the...

Vaillant Turbomax 242E - lukewarm water problem

Hi all. We have a 12-ish year old combi that is starting to show signs of age. It is largely our fault though as we haven't had it anywhere near regularly serviced or flushed (years and years since it was flushed or even touched by a plumber). Now whereas the heating is fine (radiators can be...

Removing skirting boards with CH pipes attached

Aha. Thanks Trazor, sounds like a good plan, I'll give it a bash.

Removing skirting boards with CH pipes attached

Doing a new floor and skirting boards to match. Existing boards are horrible old things and getting tatty. Trouble is, the microbore heating pipes are attached in several places and I think this could prevent me getting much leverage to remove the boards. Will I have to drain system (combi...

Real wood onto concrete. Floor height issues?

Normally when walking into the house, they're not carrying drinks/plates/breakable items... when going from kitchen into hall into living room, however... So what sort of height difference is reasonable to deal with using a threshold ramp? Up to an inch or less? Doesn't want to be over too...

Real wood onto concrete. Floor height issues?

Ha. Thanks WoodYouLike. Been reading some of your other posts on this subject! Trouble is, I just had one of those "oh damn" thoughts and called my wife to confirm. Even though there is a good gap to the bottom of the door, the hall carpet and the current wood floor level are about level. The...

Real wood onto concrete. Floor height issues?

Hi All Old wood floor is currently glued straight onto concrete (50-ish years old, very dry!). Old wood floor is 12mm thick. It got ink spilled on and insurance has paid out for new floor. We're planning on getting a nice new wood floor and the supplier has some 23mm thick stained pine stuff...

run pipes through garage for plumbing in washing machine

It's a 1948 house and there is a sewer cover in a direct line with the garage drain approx 10 metres away... I'll pour something colourful down the drain to see what turns up!

run pipes through garage for plumbing in washing machine

Hi all. Want to move washing machine from utility room to garage. There's an existing drain right outside the garage wall to run the waste to, so no probs there. The nearest water supply is the existing copper tubing to the downstairs loo. About 5 metres directly measured to the new...

Building a big swing in the garden

Hello All. Interested in any links/ideas/suggestions for building a large swing in the garden for the kids (who have outgrown the little metal framed one) and also me! Current ideas are either to try and go for a sort of a-frame construction with some long-ish poles either side leaning...

Old bath taps - want to change but confused!

don't have a tank - combi boiler, remember! Is it a case of scratching the outside of the cold pipe to see what colour it comes up? Or is there a more scientific way of sorting this out?

Old bath taps - want to change but confused!

Er... Remember, I'm no expert here! The 22mm "hot water" pipe is definitely copper. The 17mm pipe... no idea. It's seems darker than the copper pipes, but I'm not sure if that's because it's dirty or a different metal. The problem seems to be the diameter of the threaded base of the tap...
