Planning to do my own plastering any tips?

Here are a few of mine; 1. Visit theplasterersforum.com , English site loads of info and a shed load of banter 2. Check the dates on the bags that you buy as old plaster is a nightmare to use 3. Mix the plaster into water never the other way around 4. Get the first coat on sharpish and don't do...

    What's in my wall

The trouble is that without having a close up look it's hard to tell, it may well be some kind of textured paint ( that bloody stuff was everywhere) which is harmless. To be honest and as far as I'm aware, you would have to disturb a lot of the stuff to seriously damage your health and a couple...

    What's in my wall

I'm not trying to spook you but if the artex was put on before about 1990 then it does contain a amount of asbestos although I don't know how much and it is only the dust that in large quantities will do any harm. Personally I would not try to remove the artex and just plaster over the top. Mike

Screws pulling out of wall (curtain pole)

I don't know how old the property is but as you are most likely drilling into a lintel it will either be a concrete one that will need to be drilled with a SDS drill. In this case I normally start the hole by drilling with a combi drill with hammer function (because the SDS drill can be a bit...

    Ceiling help!

I'm not a electrician but the options as I see it are; 1. Cut a small notch in the joist......a bit dangerous if a screw goes through it accidentally. 2. Cut cable, drill hole in joist , re connect using a suitable connector.......may need to ask advice from someone knowledgeable. 3. Cut cable...

Screws pulling out of wall (curtain pole)

If you have a plasterboard wall that has been dot and dabbed to the brickwork behind, you will have to use special fixings. Rgifix dry lining screws will hold the rail securely http://buyrigifixonline.co.uk/. Mike

    Cleaning UPVC.

I think you would have to put an awful lot of cleaner on a plant to do it serious damage and by the time you have rinsed it all off the strength of the solution would be negligible. Here are two products which I know work well https://www.toolstation.com/shop/p31464?table=no...

    broken lock on upvc door

Have a look at this video after you have taken the handles off , it may be as simple as replacing the spring in the handle. If not, The locking mechanism will have to be changed . This is doable by yourself so don't worry about it . Mike
