guide to downlights (not live yet)

A point of interest, why are B&Q so bad, but Screwfix who are owned by B&Q and sell much of the same stuff OK? As for dimming Halogens, well I might agree with your description and reasons, but I have had no adverse affects from dimming them, including logivety. Whilst the savings on power...

holding celotex in place before putting plasterboard on pitc

I had figured it that drywall screws and washers would work, but just wondered if there was a better trick. Thanks for the help and suggestions

holding celotex in place before putting plasterboard on pitc

Not worried about the insulation between rafters - done that as you say nice and tight. Its the insulation under the rafters I want temporay fixing until I fix the plasterboard under that.

holding celotex in place before putting plasterboard on pitc

I'm not sure if this should be here or building, but as it involves plasterboard, I am sure you guys will have a useful answer. Starting to put the house back together after the dry rot issue and removal of the old lathe and plaster ceiling. Part of the room has a pitched ceiling formed...

Spur configuration found - is this OK?

An interesting discussion, but there's nowt wrong with the cable, FCU or sockets they connect to. I have no intention of touching it unless there is an issue. I am just taking the opportunity of easy access to ensure that thre is nothing dangerous or reaching the end of it's life before...

Spur configuration found - is this OK?

Having had some issues with dry rot and ceilings down etc I have taken replacing everything slowly to have a good look at the hidden infrastructure (plumbing electrics) so we only do the job once. As part of that I had a look at one spur via a switched FCU, and was surprised by what I found. I...

cable in cavity on external wall?Channel in brick or capping

What about running it in conduit in the cavity? The cable would be: - Protected from vermin, - supported, - can still be pulled through if cable needs replacing, - no channelling in wall required, - proteced from EPS - provided with an air gap to reduce potential cable...

    DIY Conservatory Cavity wall insulation

Thanks for the replies. Since I'm not likely to get much gain, and I have already paid for celotex that I wont be able to use for some time due to the the dry rot delaying finishing one room and the missus banning me from ripping any other part of the house apart this year, I'm thinking I...

    DIY Conservatory Cavity wall insulation

Mainly the risk - if any - of the beads sorrounding the balanced flue in the cavity. The flue must get hot and is that an issue?

    DIY Conservatory Cavity wall insulation

Roof will be aluminium with Pilkington active glass. Walls will be UPVC with Pilkington K glass, so a massive improvement on the broken and thin panes previously there. Heat loss from the glass will always be an issue with conservatories, but we have gone for about the best we can. The...

    DIY Conservatory Cavity wall insulation

The glazing part of the conservatory has come to the end of its life, but the base and the dwarf walls are fine. We are therefore having the conservatory roof and windows only replaced. The company has taken down the roof and windows which has revealed - as expected - the walls cavities are...

    Lighting circuit layout

Thanks, I could see why it would be an issue, but always worth checking with the experts. Just counted up 900watts and the cable is 1.5 T+E so should be fine and dandy :D

    Lighting circuit layout

As a result of the dry rot we had recently we had to take some ceilings down which has exposed the electrics. It all looks pretty good considering - all pvc and T+E so I'm really pleased I don't have to get that sorted as well. But, what I did notice was the upstairs lighting circuit is not...

    Conduit Adapters

    ColJack, Thanks makes sense now.

    Conduit Adapters

Indeed BAN I understand the concept, but in the context of conduit, I can't quite see why both types are needed.

    Conduit Adapters

Purely out of interest, and I'm probably being slow, but why are there male and female conduit adapters? They both appear to perform the same function.

wet loft roll insulation - is it scrap?

Maybe Wickes own brand is not as good quality as it is acting more like a sponge.

wet loft roll insulation - is it scrap?

Unfortunately I was in a hurry when I bought it (intended to use it that weekend, but rot issues stopped that) and was on my way home from work so not really dressed buying timber and insulation. So took the first 4 rolls and moved on and noticed nothing different. Considering part of the wet...

wet loft roll insulation - is it scrap?

I bought some 1140 x 5330 x 150mm rolls of loft insulation about a month ago and they have been stored in my attached and heated garage. When I came to use it I found 2 of the rolls wet at one end. In fact they are soaking in places. I can only assume that they had been stood in water at the...
