    Garage extension

Ok that’s good to know. We’ve cleared all the work with the neighbour. A bricky we had round suggested only about a foot for the foundations as it’s a small single skin extension to the existing garage. Will continue to investigate.

Retaining wall foundation and patio drainage

Yes the remaining part of the old patio will be coming up tomorrow and the ground taken down as level as possible to the target of 150mm deep. The wall is already down - that was last nights job. And tonight I’ve levelled that area so it’s lookong better. There are some obvious high points so...

Retaining wall foundation and patio drainage

Thanks for the reply. The ground seems to be a mix of general mud for the top layer, then about 3 inches of sandy material in the middle and clay for the rest. I’ve been here 10 years and can’t say it gets water logged, just the general wet ground when we’ve had a lot of heavy rain. Also, the...

Retaining wall foundation and patio drainage

I’ve dug out roughly the area for our new patio and want to get started on the retaining wall. The wall will only be about 2’ high - so what sort of foundations would I be looking at for that? I understand that I would need to dig or about 1’ further than the wall to allow for backfilling? I...

Fence posts with wall around patio

We’re about to undertake a job in our garden where we will be extending the patio and fencing the entire garden. We are planning on concrete posts, 300mm gravel boards and 5ft panels. The patio sits lower than the garden so we would but putting a wall around it much like the existing layout. My...

OK great, I'll take a look at those requirements and see where that leads us.

    Garage extension

Hi all, as part of our garden works we're looking to extend our garage by aprx 6-8 foot. It is a single brick flat roof garage. Would this sort of work require any planning permission? Thanks

What is this on my concrete path?

Ok that would make sense, next time we get a volume of rain I’ll check to see what’s occurring around there. Thanks all

What is this on my concrete path?

It is a pain. The house is a standard 2 storey semi detached. No services at that point of the house or garage. It is almost like it’s a marker or end point for the path as it is against the jut in the brick work at the back corner. There is the jut in the brick work at the front corner but no step.

What is this on my concrete path?

Not had a problem with it so assuming its ok. Question still remains on what the hell this step is for

What is this on my concrete path?

Ah, I see what you mean. That is a bit of an optical illusion. The DPC is the same level all the way round, there is a jut out in the back corner which is why it looks like it changes level. So yes, from the concrete of the pavement it is 2 courses, but as the patio is sloped at the back of the...

What is this on my concrete path?

    I don't get it?

What is this on my concrete path?

What is the DPC? The whole patio area is sloped, but pretty sure thats down to very poor ground prep when it was done by the landlord.

What is this on my concrete path?

Hi all, hoping this is the best forum for my question. I have this ‘step’ on a concrete path that runs between my house and garage, and I don’t have a clue what it could be for. Any ideas? Thanks! Pavement step1 by onionsa posted 7 May 2018 at 5:01 PM Pavement step2 by onionsa posted 7 May...

Can you close off a chimney completely?

Ok, we'll air on the side of caution in this respect and see if we can find some vents that dont look aweful lol Thanks very much for your help!

Can you close off a chimney completely?

Yeah that seems like more than we're wanting to do. So we must have a vent in the existing chimney mouth in the lounge, but can brick up the rest, right?

Can you close off a chimney completely?

When you say fully remove from the top down, what would this require? At the moment we basically just have a hole running through our house with a pot on the top and a tiled hole in the lounge.

Can you close off a chimney completely?

Hi all, just wanting to get a firm answer on whether or not you can completely seal an unused Chimney? We're looking to take the fire place down and turn the wall into just a normal wall, but I see many posts about vent blocks. Many thanks, Anthony

Can someone identify what this might be?

My guess would be that was put on when the pipework was changed.
